Hurtsmile is an American hard rock band led by extreme singer Gary Cherone .

history

The band was formed in 2007 by Gary Cherone as a singer with his brother Mark. Gary and Mark Cherone had played together in Slip Kid, a tribute band for The Who . Bassist Joe Pessia was active in Tantric and was also bassist in Nuno Bettencourt's band DramaGods . Drummer Dana Spellman was a student of former Extreme drummer Mike Mangini . At first some demos were released, but because of Gary Cherone's activities with Extreme, the band had to take a break. After the extreme album Saudades de Rock (2008) Nuno Bettencourt got the offer to go on tour with Rihanna , so Gary Cherone could take care of Hurtsmile again. In 2011 the self-titled album was released .

The name Hurtsmile comes from Gary Cherone. In an interview with "Metal Shrine" he explained that the term came from his youth. He comes from the situation when someone got injured at a football game and didn't want to cry in front of the others. Then someone tried to laugh anyway, even if it hurt, but since the pain was not completely hidden, the other children shouted “Hurtsmile, Hurtsmile!”.

The band's second album, Retrogrenade, was released in 2014 as part of a crowdfunding campaign .
