Yountville AVA (recognized since March 19, 1999) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California and is part of the national Napa Valley AVA . The vineyards are around the city of Yountville , which gave the region its name. The city's founder, George Calvert Yount, planted the region's first vineyard in 1836. The Yountville AVA is one of the cooler wine-growing regions of the Napa Valley and allows the grape varieties to mature for a long time. Yountville is particularly known for its tannin-rich Cabernet Sauvignon . This wine has good aging potential in the bottle.
