Dancing in the Street is a 1964 Martha & the Vandellas song written by Marvin Gaye , William "Mickey" Stevenson, and Ivy Jo Hunter. A more successful version appeared in 1985 by David Bowie and Mick Jagger .

Dancing in the Street was released worldwide on July 21, 1964. The song is about a time when people were dancing in a city - the idea of dancing came from Stevenson. He saw some people on the streets of Detroit stand under a jet of water from an open fire hydrant in the summer , and it seemed to him that the people had been dancing. The song was originally supposed to be sung by Kim Weston, but after Martha Reeves read the lyrics, it was decided that Martha & the Vandellas should sing the song. It appeared on the album Dance Party , the B-side of the single is There He Is (At My Door) . The Library of Congress added the song to the National Recording Registry. In the list of 500 best songs of all time the Rolling Stones , it was selected at No. 40 among the 365 Songs of the Century of the RIAA , it was ranked 139. Furthermore Des it was from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the did 500 songs Shaped Rock and Roll and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame .

In August 1985, David Bowie and Mick Jagger released their version of Dancing in the Street, which became a number one hit in countries like the UK , Ireland and Australia . Originally, the song was to be performed by Bowie at Live Aid at Wembley Stadium and by Jagger at JFK Stadium, but due to the half-second delay in satellite transmission , this could not be implemented. Instead, the duo recorded the song in June 1985 at Abbey Road Studios . It was Bowie's last number one hit .
David Mallet directed the music video that was shot at Docklands Studios. The recording time was 13 hours. In the clip, Bowie and Jagger dance in the stairwell of a warehouse and on a street as a reference to the title. The video was named Best Overall Performance in a Video at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards .
