No Means No (also Nomeansno ) was a hardcore punk band from Vancouver , Canada . The name was taken from an anti- rape slogan.

history

No Means No was founded in 1979 by the brothers Rob ( bass guitar and vocals) and John Wright ( drums , vocals, keyboards ). In 1983 Andy Kerr joined as guitarist , who was replaced by Tom Holliston in 1992 after he left. The members of the band liked to appear under pseudonyms, so the Wright brothers are also known as “Mr. Right "and" Mr. Wrong "known. This was taken to extremes by the guitarist Andy Kerr, who did not appear on any album under his real name, but instead gave himself names like "... Uuuuh ...", "Buttercup" or "None of your fucking business". Craig Bougie ("sound man extraordinaire"), who was responsible for the live sound, was counted as a further member .

In September 2016, Rob Wright announced the breakup of the band.

style

The style of the band stands out from the usual hardcore and punk sound through the strong, funk- inspired rhythm , and is also assigned to jazzcore . He is particularly shaped by the dominating and driving bass playing of Rob Wright and the breakbeats of his brother John. In the texts, No Means No deal with political issues ( More ICBMs , Rags and Bones ), family dramas ( Dad ), psychological and interpersonal abysses ( Tired of Waiting , What Slayde Says , Theresa, Give Me That Knife ) and Canadian local patriotism. Often apocalyptic images can be found in the texts ( The Tower , Dead Souls ), this is in contrast to the mostly exuberant atmosphere at their concerts. Their humor is also evident in their contribution to the anniversary sampler Virus 100 of their record company Alternative Tentacles : They covered Forward to Death by the Dead Kennedys in an a cappella version.

The members also played in other projects, including a. in the band The Hanson Brothers (a homage to the Ramones and a simultaneous allusion to the ice hockey movie Slap Shot ), Rob Wright followed as “Mr. Wrong “a solo project. There were collaborations among members of the band. a. with Victims Family , Show Business Giants , DOA and Jello Biafra .
