Sam Dockery

Sam Dockery (born 1929 in Lawnside , New Jersey , † December 23, 2015 in Burlington , New Jersey) was an American jazz pianist .

Dockery, who lived mostly in Philadelphia , worked with trumpeter Clifford Brown in the early 1950s . He became known in 1956/57 as a member of Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers , where he appeared with Bill Hardman , Jackie McLean , Spanky DeBrest and occasionally Johnny Griffin . Recordings were also made during a TV appearance with Stan Getz . In the late 1950s and early 1960s he was a member of the Jimmy Heath quartet alongside bassist Buster Williams and drummer Specs Wright .

Dockery a. a. with Roy Haynes ( People , 1964), Sonny Stitt , Benny Golson and Stan Getz. From the 1990s he also taught at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In addition to the recordings with the Jazz Messengers from the 1950s, there are more recent recordings by Dockery et al. a. on the double album Live At Ortlieb's Jazzhaus (2000). In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 17 recording sessions between 1955 and 2006. Dockery died of complications from Alzheimer's disease at Burlington Woods Hospital in late 2015 at the age of 86 .
