Specs Wright
Charles "Specs" Wright (born September 8, 1927 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania, † February 6, 1963 there ) was an American jazz drummer.
Wright played in a band in the US Army until 1947 . He was then a member of the groups of saxophonist Jimmy Heath and trumpeter Howard McGhee before joining the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band in 1949 . In the same year he was also the drummer on John Coltrane's first commercial recordings. In 1950 he recorded with the sextet of Dizzy Gillespie , which also included Coltrane, Jimmy Heath, Percy Heath and Milt Jackson .
In the 1950s, Wright worked with musicians such as saxophonist Earl Bostic , pianist Kenny Drew, Sr. , saxophonist Cannonball Adderley , drummer Art Blakey ( Orgy in Rhythm ), and singer Carmen McRae . In 1958 he worked on the LP series Monday Night at Birdland by the Hank Mobley Septet . At the same time he also played with saxophonist Sonny Rollins and singer Betty Carter .
In 1959 he was part of the Red Garland trio for a short time , which recorded with saxophonist Coleman Hawkins during this time . In 1960 and 1961 he accompanied the vocal group Lambert , Hendricks & Ross .
