Spanky DeBrest
Jimmy "Spanky" DeBrest even Spanky De Brest (actually James DeBrest * 24. April 1937 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † March 1973 ) was an American jazz - bassist . He played with Art Blakey and JJ Johnson .
At the beginning of his career DeBrest played in local orchestras in Philadelphia, then from 1956 to 1958 with Art Blakey, where he participated in the legendary session with Thelonious Monk in May 1957 . From 1958 to 1960 he played in JJ Johnson's band. He also starred on recordings by Ray Draper , Clifford Jordan and Lee Morgan .
