Don Sickler

Don Sickler (born January 6, 1944 in Spokane ) is an American jazz trumpeter , arranger , music publisher and producer .

From the age of four, Sickler learned to play the piano from his mother, a cinema musician. He started playing the trumpet at the age of ten and played in a Dixie band at the age of twelve , which soon became quite successful. He studied trumpet with Donald Byrd and arrangement with Russ Garcia , before completing his bachelor's degree at Gonzaga University in his native city. In 1967 he moved to New York City , where he attended the Manhattan School of Music and made music in Broadway theaters . In the 1970s he worked for music publishers, for example at EB Marks as the editor in charge, before founding his own jazz publishers. In the late 1970s he played alongside Philly Joe Jones to form the tribute band Dameronia in the 1980s, dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron . In 1986 and 1987 he directed the Thelonious Monk Reunion Orchestra . In the same year he made a guest appearance with his own quartet in Paris, before founding Superblue . In another tribute band, Birdology , he worked with Jackie McLean and Johnny Griffin . As a musician, he has also recorded with Clifford Jordan , Cedar Walton and Jimmy Gourley .

As a producer he has worked for Freddie Hubbard , Woody Shaw , Larry Coryell , Wallace Roney , Donald Brown and especially for Joe Henderson ; four of the albums with Henderson were awarded a Grammy . More than 300 of his arrangements have been recorded by musicians such as Art Blakey , Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw.
