Sant Salvador de Guardiola (Spanish sometimes just Guardiola ) is a place and a municipality ( municipi ) with 3179 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the comarca of Bages in the province of Barcelona in the autonomous region of Catalonia . The municipality also includes the villages and hamlets of El Calbet, Carrer de Dalt i Ca l'Esteve, Coll d'Arboç, El Graell, El Pinyot, Raval del Parrot, Raval del Sellerès, Salellas and Set-rengs .

The place Sant Salvador de Guardiola is at an altitude of about 370 meters above sea level. d. M. in the north of the Comarca Bages in the cultural and wine landscape Pla de Bages . The cities of Manresa and Barcelona are about eight kilometers northeast and 68 kilometers (driving distance) southeast.

In the middle of the 19th century the community had around 800 inhabitants; the phylloxera crisis in viticulture caused a decline at the end of the 19th century. The increasing mechanization of agriculture led to another slump in population around the middle of the 20th century. Due to its proximity to the city of Manresa, the community has experienced a rapid boom in the last few decades.

In the past, the inhabitants lived mainly as a self-sufficiency from agriculture , which also included growing wine and keeping livestock (especially sheep and goats). Guardiola and Salelles also functioned as handicraft and mercantile centers for the villages and individual farms ( masies ) in the area in the Middle Ages . In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, viticulture played a major role in the region, but the phylloxera crisis put an end to this. Since the 1980s, the community has experienced an overall economic boom.
history
So far, no prehistoric , ancient , Visigoth or Islamic traces have been discovered. In the 9th and 10th centuries, the almost deserted region was recaptured ( reconquista ) from the hands of Islam by the Counts of Barcelona , repopulated ( repoblación ) and secured with castles ( castells ) and churches ( esglésies or ermitas ). The first written mention of the place name comes from the 15th century.
