In the 19th century, the region developed into an important wine-growing area, but after the phylloxera crisis, agriculture is now predominantly again practiced. Viticulture, however, plays an important role again - San Fruitós de Bages is one of a total of 26 municipalities that are allowed to market their wine under the Pla de Bages denomination .

history

One dedicated to St. Fructuosus , a bishop from Taraco or Tarragona , is first mentioned in the 10th century as the reconquest ( reconquista ) and repopulation ( repoblación ) of the area under Borrell of Osona and Wilfried I of Barcelona, which was almost depopulated after the arrival of Islam was already completed.

Attractions

  • Despite its long history, the town of San Fruitós itself - with the exception of two old town streets - has hardly any sights. The parish church of Sant Fruitós is of Romanesque origin, but it was almost completely renovated in the 17th century.
  • The small Romanesque chapel of Sant Jaume d'Olzinelles is just under two kilometers outside and impresses with its solid but otherwise completely unadorned masonry. The west side is surmounted by a bell gable ( espadanya ).
  • The Romanesque church of Sant Iscle i Santa Victòria is also largely adorned, but has an impressive bell tower ( campanar ) with a blind arcade structure in the lower area.
  • The church of Sant Jaume del Pont de Cabrianes is a neo-Romanesque building from the late 19th century.
  • The pretty chapel of Sant Sebastià de les Brucardes is - with the exception of the corner stones and the portal frame - built from rubble stones. A simple bell gable rises above the portal. Despite its altogether ancient appearance, it is an 18th century building.
  • The chapel of Sant Valentí de les Brucardes has a much more precise masonry and a two-part bell gable. However, the roof has long since collapsed. The construction is dated to the 13th or 14th century.
  • The monastery of Sant Benet des Bages , located about one and a half kilometers southeast on the banks of the Llobregat, is one of the most important abbeys in Catalonia.
