The Autopista Ma-20 , also known as Via de Cintura , is the city ring around the Balearic capital Palma de Mallorca .
It begins on the Ma-19 airport motorway and ends at the driveway to the Ma-1 Autopista .
history
In the 1980s, almost 45,000 cars were registered on Mallorca. Since it was to be assumed that these numerical values would continue to increase in the later years, ways of relieving the inner cities from the increasing volume of traffic were already sought.
From 1990 onwards, in order to calm the traffic in the center of Palma, sections of the Autopista Ma-20, previously known as PM-20, were gradually opened. The opened sections all had an extension of 2 × 2 lanes.
From 2010, the Ma-20 was gradually expanded to six lanes due to the further increase in traffic.
In 2015, almost 1 million vehicles were already registered on the island. Nevertheless, the volume of traffic in Mallorca continues to increase and the roads are still congested. According to reports by the Consell de Mallorca in 2017, there was already a traffic volume of up to 188,682 vehicles per day on some road sections on the Ma-20, which will continue to increase in 2018. That is why there are numerous accidents and long traffic jams. There are many incidents, especially during the summer holidays, as at this time, in addition to the islanders, many tourists are also driving their rental cars on the motorway.
In order to counteract this ever-increasing traffic load and to relieve the Via de Cintura, a second city ring with four lanes, the Via Conectora , is to be built around the island's capital Palma. However, this is not yet fully completed.
