IVO LAPENNA (* 5. November 1909 in Split , Austria-Hungary ; † 15. December 1987 in Copenhagen , Denmark ) was a Yugoslav - British lawyer and professor at University College London and one of the most important Esperanto - activists .

life and career

In Zagreb , Lapenna had worked as a lawyer since his doctorate in 1933, in a law firm that represented politically accused individuals, among other things. During the Second World War he worked in a propaganda department of the Yugoslav partisans , including in Bari, Italy .

After the war, the major in the reserve was first editor-in-chief of the State Gazette and in 1948 professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Zagreb . In 1949 he left Yugoslavia and went first to Paris , then to London . Years later he was able to regain a professorship as a specialist in comparative Eastern European and Soviet law, especially criminal law.

Social Commitment

Lapenna is considered one of the most important Esperanto activists. It is mainly thanks to his work that UNESCO passed a resolution in favor of Esperanto on December 10, 1954 and granted the World Esperanto Federation ( Universala Esperanto-Asocio ) consultant status.

From 1955 to 1964 he was general secretary and from 1964 to 1974 chairman of the World Esperanto Federation.
