Location of the municipality | ||
Villaviciosa (Miliayo / Villaviciosa in Asturian ) is a concejo of the Comarca Gijón in the autonomous region of Asturias in northwestern Spain . The port city is located around 20 km east-southeast of Gijón at the end of the 9 km long ría (bay) of Villaviciosa, where it flows into the Bay of Biscay .
history
The crest
The community bears the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation under Charles I.
Until the Middle Ages
The first settlements were proven by finds from the Epipalaeolithic . The persistent settlement is confirmed by megalithic finds , ramparts and dolmens in the Ria and some valleys around today's Villaviciosa. The Romans used the place as a landing stage. In the Kingdom of Asturias , the places Amandi, Camoca, Fuentes and Bedriñana were founded and placed under the municipality.
And then
In the 12th century , Villaviciosa was subordinate to Oviedo . Starting with the reorganization of the administration under Alfonso IX. the community was first confirmed within its borders in 1270 under Alfonso X. The monastery " Monasterio de Santa María de Valdediós " in the neighboring Parroquia Puelles was given jurisdiction . Under the Catholic Monarchs , a pilgrims' hostel (hospice) was built for pilgrims on the Way of St. James ( Camino de la Costa ) to Santiago de Compostela . In 1517 the future Emperor Charles V landed in the nearby port of Tazones and then made a guest appearance in the Casa de Hevia, which is still preserved today . During the Napoleonic Wars on the Iberian Peninsula , the Parroquia was the march area for Spanish and Napoleonic troops.
geology
The geological structures that arose in the Triassic , Jurassic and Cretaceous periods can now be clearly seen on the cliffs and mountain ranges. The old building materials, mostly sandstone and limestone , also reflect this.
economy
The oldest branch of business in the region is undoubtedly the livestock industry; milk production and processing in particular have a large market share here today. Under Charles V , the fishing port of Tazones was subordinated to the municipality, and fishing is still an important branch of industry today .
The community is also known for its cider , which is still produced today in many smaller but also industrial companies.
