Peñamellera Baja (Peñamellera Baxa) is a municipality in the autonomous region of Asturias , in northern Spain with the administrative center in Panes . Bounded to the north by Llanes and Ribadedeva , to the west by Peñamellera Alta and to the east by Cantabria .
history
Finds from the Stone Age (especially in the nearby Cuevas de La Loja) attest to the early settlement activity. The place was first mentioned in 1032 when Vermudo III. King of Leon , the places Piniolo and Aldonza with Fernando II , king of Asturias, exchanged. In 1340 the city received under King Alfonso XI. a redistribution of the area and the town charter. In the years 1514–1522 the city received its own jurisdiction . In 1584 the municipality fell to neighboring Cantabria during a reorganization of the municipalities . After this was not in agreement with the population, the then King Carlos II granted the farmers a tax exemption on cattle in order to keep the peace. Only in 1833 in a further reorganization did the city return to Asturias.
economy
The largest economic sector is agriculture (with 46.52% in 2005). In particular, cattle, sheep and goats are bred for milk production in order to supply local cheese dairies that e.g. Some of them produce nationally known cheese. The second largest economic sector is the construction industry, which accounts for around 16% of the economic volume. Tourism is becoming increasingly important in the service sector.
