Noreña is a municipality ( concejo in Asturias, corresponds to municipio in the rest of Spain) in the south of the Autonomous Region of Asturias in Spain .

The municipality with its 5179 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) has an area of ​​5.29 km² and is divided into three:

Parroquias

• Celles , 75 inhabitants (2011)
• Noreña, 5348 inhabitants (2011)
• Santa Marina , 9 inhabitants (2011)

history

The first documents of the place were found around 1920 by the historian Juan Uría Ríu, which describe a place on the river rio Noreña . These documents date to the 12th century.
In 989, Count Gundemaro Piñoliz and his wife gave the Bishop of Oviedo Bermudo Mumadonna lands on the banks of the Rio Noreña in exchange for the Church of Santa Maria in Tol . The corresponding deed of donation dates to the year 1103.
Another deed of donation from 1151 shows that Landgrave Gonzalo Peláez and his wife donated an inhabited property called Noreña (que vulgare vocatur Naurenia) to the monastery of San Vicente. Here the name of the place is mentioned for the first time. Ten years later, the administration was reorganized, with jurisdiction falling to the neighboring Siero .
