Swilengrad [ ˈsvilɛŋˌɡrat ] ( Bulgarian Свиленград until 1913 Mustafa Pascha / Мустафа Паша Turkish Mustafapaşa ) is a Bulgarian city in Thrace on the Maritsa River, at the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains .
The city is located approx. 2 km from the Greek and approx. 14 km from the Turkish border.
history
In this area of the Rhodope Mountains the origin of the Thracian fertility cult ( Orphic cult) is said to lie. On the river Mariza there is said to have been a mythical battle between Hera (embodiment of the Rhodope Mountains) and Zeus (embodiment of the Balkan Mountains ).
Even after the fall of the Ottoman Empire , many Pomaks remained here , who were only expelled to the Turkish part of Thrace, Eastern Thrace in 1971 because of disputes .
The city has given its name to the Swilengrad Peninsula in Antarctica since 2016 .
