Willi Ruttensteiner

Willibald "Willi" Ruttensteiner (born November 12, 1962 in Steyr , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian football official and coach. From 2001 to 2017 he was the sports director of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) and project manager of the funding program for young talents Projekt12. He coached the Austrian national team twice on an interim basis. Since 2018 he has been the sports director of the Israeli Football Association.

After Didi Constantini's resignation in September 2011, Ruttensteiner was temporarily ÖFB national coach for two games. In these two games he achieved a win and a draw. He was also jointly responsible for the initially controversial commitment of national coach Marcel Koller .

Career as trainer and functionary

At the beginning of his coaching career, Ruttensteiner coached the Upper Austrian lower-class club Sportunion Wolfern . He coached this club for two years. On July 1, 1993, he became a trainer at ATSV Sattledt , also a club from Upper Austria. He left him in 1995. In July 1995, he took over the U-18 team from BNZ FC Linz, with whom he became Austrian U-18 champions the following season.

From 1996 Ruttensteiner was assistant coach at FC Linz under Heinz Hochhauser and rose with the team in the 1st Bundesliga. From 1997 to 1998 he was head coach. From 1998 to 1999 he was the sporting director at the BNZ OÖ LASK Linz and junior coordinator of the OÖFV.

From 1999, Ruttensteiner looked after the Austrian U-21 national team for a little more than six years . He contested with him, among other things, the qualifications for the European Championship in 2002, 2004 and 2006, but you could not qualify for all three finals.

From 1999 to 2001 he worked as a sports coordinator, from 2001 to 2017 as a sports director at the ÖFB . He was also jointly responsible for the initially controversial commitment of national coach Marcel Koller .

In October 2005, after Hans Krankl's departure, Ruttensteiner looked after the Austrian national team interim together with Andreas Herzog and Slavko Kovačić for the World Cup qualifiers against England (0: 1) and Northern Ireland (2: 0). From October to November 2011, after Didi Constantini's resignation, he again took on the sporting responsibility as interim coach for the A-team in the European Championship qualifiers against Azerbaijan (4: 1) and Kazakhstan (0: 0).

Since 2018, Ruttensteiner has been the sports director of the Israeli national soccer team , which is coached by ÖFB record national player Andreas Herzog .
