Career

societies

Manninger got into the SV Austria Salzburg squad via the Salzburg Youth Center, where he was third goalkeeper after Otto Konrad and Herbert Ilsanker under coach Otto Barić . In order to allow him to collect match practice, Salzburg awarded him to SK Vorwärts Steyr for the autumn round of the 1995/96 season . In the Upper Austrians he was in the first team and recommended himself, among other things, in direct encounters with his next club, the Grazer AK .

In 1997 he moved to Arsenal FC in England for a rumored transfer fee of 15 million schillings and was the first Austrian football player in the Premier League . He was mainly used as a replacement for David Seaman in the cup competitions, but due to Seaman's protracted injuries he was also repeatedly in action over longer distances in the championship. In his first Premier League season, he was also the first and so far only reserve goalkeeper to receive the “ Player of the Month ” award. His team became champions one point ahead of Manchester United . Arsenal's original intention to build him up as the successor to the aging Seaman failed because Manninger's performance fluctuated in the 2000/01 season.

In August 2001 he moved to the Italian first division club Fiorentina on loan for a year . After his return in July 2002, he moved to the Spanish first division club Espanyol Barcelona , where he received a four-year contract. In August 2002 Espanyol dissolved the contract again. In January 2003 he returned to Italy, to FC Turin , in summer 2003 to FC Bologna . A planned loan deal with Brescia Calcio collapsed; in August 2003 he was loaned to AC Siena . In July 2005 he returned to his youth club FC Red Bull Salzburg and after another season back to AC Siena, which tied him permanently. In the summer of 2008, Manninger was given by Salzburg to the northern Italian club Udinese Calcio for around 1.8 million euros . On August 5, 2008, he moved to the Italian record champions Juventus Turin for around 2.5 million euros , where he signed a four-year contract and was second goalkeeper behind Gianluigi Buffon . He made his debut for Juventus Turin on September 21, 2008 (3rd matchday). During Buffon's long injury-related break, Manninger played over many games and was voted the best goalkeeper of the first half of the season by the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport . After Marco Storari was signed in June 2010, Manninger lost his status as second goalkeeper behind Buffon and was henceforth only third choice. After his contract with Juventus Turin expired at the end of the 2011/12 season, he initially remained without a club.

On November 21, 2012, Manninger was signed by FC Augsburg to replace the injured Simon Jentzsch . He received a contract until the end of the season. He made his debut for FCA on December 18, 2012 in the DFB Cup - round of 16 in the 2-0 defeat against FC Bayern Munich . His last competitive game had been two years at this point. Manninger made his Bundesliga debut in a 3-2 win in the away game against Fortuna Düsseldorf on January 20, 2013 (18th matchday). It was only under team boss Josef Hickersberger that he was considered again for a test international match. At the EM 2008 he was the second goalkeeper behind Jürgen Macho .
