Erwin "Jimmy" Hoffer (born April 14, 1987 in Baden ) is an Austrian football player in the position of a striker . He owes his nickname "Jimmy" to his junior coach Karl Brauneder .

Career

societies

Hoffer began his career as a professional footballer with Admira Wacker Mödling , for whom he played on the fighting team from 2004 to 2006. His nickname "Jimmy" came from a comparison with the killer Jimmy the tulip from the movie No half measures . According to coach Brauneder, Hoffer has the same freezing cold as the film character in front of the goal . Furthermore, the nickname is an allusion to the former US union leader Jimmy Hoffa .

The young striker drew attention to himself with goals in the 2005/06 season finale at Admira due to his goal instinct and his speed. Hoffer made his first appearance in the Bundesliga in the 2004/05 season. In June 2006 he moved to the Austrian Bundesliga competitor SK Rapid Vienna , where he replaced the striker Muhammet Akagündüz who had migrated to Turkey .

In 2006 he reached the semi-finals of the U-19 European Championship in Poland with the Austrian U-19 team, not least thanks to his four goals. However, he missed the defeat in the semi-final against Spain due to a yellow card suspension. In 2007 he finished fourth with the Austrian team at the U-20 World Cup in Canada . He scored three goals, which made him fifth on the top scorer list.

In addition, the striker established himself as a regular at Rapid. In the 2007/08 season, Hoffer scored three goals in Rapids' 7-0 away win against FC Red Bull Salzburg . A few games later, before the end of the season, he became Austrian champions for the first time in his career. In the following season he scored four goals in one half in a 7-2 win against Bundesliga club SCR Altach .

In the summer of 2009, Hoffer moved to the Italian Serie A club SSC Napoli after he had already played three competitive games for Rapid . The parties agreed not to disclose the transfer fee. Hoffer scored in the first competitive match for SSC Napoli in the Coppa Italia , although he did not have a secure starting place in the team for the entire following season.

For the 2010/11 season Hoffer was loaned to the German Bundesliga promoted 1. FC Kaiserslautern . In his first competitive game, a cup game against VfL Osnabrück , Hoffer scored two goals in extra time and thus ensured Kaiserslautern advance to the second round of the DFB Cup. On September 18, 2010, he scored his first two goals in the German Bundesliga on matchday four in a 2-2 draw against TSG Hoffenheim.

For the 2011/12 season, Hoffer moved to Eintracht Frankfurt, who had been relegated to the second division , as a loan with an option to buy in case of promotion. Despite the rise, Hoffer was not firmly committed and initially returned to Naples after the season. On August 4, 2012, the loan for the 2012/13 season was extended.

For the second half of the 2012/13 season Hoffer moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern on loan . His first game after his return to Kaiserslautern was the 1-0 away win on February 4, 2013 against TSV 1860 Munich , when he came on for Mimoun Azaouagh in the 63rd minute . He scored his first goal after his return on February 8, 2013 in a 3-0 home win against Dynamo Dresden with the goal of the final score.

On August 21, 2013 Hoffer moved back to the 2nd Bundesliga at Fortuna Düsseldorf , where he signed a two-year contract until June 30, 2015. In June 2015, Karlsruher SC signed him with a two-year contract. He scored his first goal for Karlsruhe in the 2-1 away win against FSV Frankfurt on August 14, 2015, the 3rd matchday of the 2015/16 season. After a total of 50 league appearances and 6 goals for KSC, Hoffer was relegated to the third division with the club at the end of the 2016/17 season. His expiring contract was not extended, so he was without a club. He then moved to Belgium in September 2017 to join the second division KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk , where he played until his contract expired in June 2019.

In August 2019 he returned to Admira Wacker Mödling.

National team

Hoffer made his A international debut in the Austrian national team in the 0-0 draw against Paraguay on June 2, 2007 in the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium and was then part of the Austrian squad at the 2008 European Championship in his own country. There he played in the last group game against Germany and set a lot of accents. He played throughout the game, which Austria ultimately lost 1-0. Many daily newspapers agreed that despite the defeat, he was one of the assets of the Austrian team.

In the first game under Didi Constantini, he was the match winner with two goals in a 2-1 win against Romania in the World Cup qualification. He thus marked his first goals for the A-team of the Austrian national team.
