The SK Rapid Wien II is the second team of the Austrian Bundesliga SK Rapid Wien . The team has been playing in the 2nd division since the 2020/21 season .
history
The amateurs of Rapid took part in the 2001/02 season for the first time in the ÖFB Cup and, after a first round win against FC Deutschkreutz, they also reached the second round, in which they failed at the later finalists SK Sturm Graz . In the 2004/05 season they took part in the cup again and threw Bundesliga club FC Wacker Tirol out of the competition in the first round . In the second round, however, it was the end of the line after losing to the Bundesliga club SV Mattersburg .
After years in the Vienna City League , the Rapid Amateurs were able to become champions in the 2005/06 season and thus move up to the third-class Regionalliga Ost for the first time . In the debut season in the third division, the team finished sixth in the table. In the 2007/08 season, the Rapidler even improved to third place. In the 2008/09 season Rapid II took part in the Cup for a third time. After a first round win against Union St. Florian , they met Bundesliga club SCR Altach in the second round , who they could also defeat. In the last sixteen, the Bundesliga club SV Mattersburg was shot 5-1 out of the cup, before they were finally defeated in the quarter-finals by the second division team FK Austria Wien II , the second team of rivals FK Austria Wien , in a penalty shootout. In the league they finished sixth again in 2008/09. In the 2009/10 season, Rapid II was in fifth place at the end of the season. A curiosity arose in the 2010/11 season when they met Rapid's pros in the first round of the Cup, who were beaten 5-2. In 2010/11 they finished seventh in the league.
In the 2011/12 season they defeated the Bundesliga club SC Wiener Neustadt in the first round and the second division Wolfsberger AC in the second round . In the last sixteen they finally lost against the second division TSV Hartberg . In the league, the 2011/12 season was the best in the team's history up to then: They were runner-up in the Eastern League, two points behind SV Horn . In the following three seasons you could again establish yourself in the top 10 with places seven, five and nine. As twelfth in the 2015/16 season, the Rapid amateurs failed to reach a single-digit place in the table for the first time. In the 2016/17 season they came in tenth again. In the 2017/18 season they successfully applied for admission to the 2nd division for the first time , but as sixth, eleven points behind Austria Wien II, they had little to do with the promotion. In the 2018/19 season it was again approved, but in sixth place it clearly missed the necessary second place.
In the 2019/20 season, after 18 rounds, they finished second before the regional league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . After Bundesliga club Mattersburg stopped playing in August 2020, there was no relegation from the Bundesliga, which freed up a place in the 2nd division. Since Rapid II together with SK Sturm Graz II , who, however, renounced promotion, were the only teams with a license, Rapid II received the award for the free place and was proposed by the Bundesliga to the ÖFB. This request was granted.
