Michael Gspurning (born May 2, 1981 in Graz ) is a former Austrian soccer goalkeeper and current goalkeeping coach .

Career

In the club

Gspurning began his career at ASK Voitsberg in the Regionalliga Mitte . He was a regular there at the age of 17 until he finally moved to Wiener Austria in 2000 . From 2001 to 2004 Gspurning played at DSV Leoben in the first division .

At the beginning of 2004 he moved to ASKÖ Pasching in the Bundesliga and acted as the second goalie behind Josef Schicklgruber . After three years in Upper Austria, he joined Skoda Xanthi in the Greek Super League in winter 2006/07 . He was the team's regular goalkeeper for four years before signing a new contract in 2011 and announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the year.

Then Gspurning moved to Major League Soccer (MLS) for the Seattle Sounders . He was signed as the successor to Kasey Keller . He played his first game for the Sounders on March 7, 2012 in the CONCACAF Champions League game against Santos Laguna . After 62 competitive games, Gspurning left the club at the end of the championship in 2013 due to the financial situation. He had reached the MLS play-offs in each of his two seasons in the USA, failing in the semifinals at LA Galaxy in 2012 and in the quarter-finals in the 2013 season at the Portland Timbers .

On January 30, 2015, FC Schalke 04 signed Gspurning as goalkeeper for the club's second team. There he received a contract that ran until the end of the 2014/15 season . For the new 2015/16 season he was promoted to the Bundesliga team as a substitute goalkeeper, with whom he signed a contract dated June 30, 2016. In the second round of the DFB Cup 2015/16 , Gspurning made his competitive debut for the first team of FC Schalke 04 in the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach .

In August 2016, the second division club 1. FC Union Berlin signed him . He did not play a competitive game for the club. On December 17, 2017, Gspurning ended his active career and became the club's goalkeeping coach. For this purpose, he signed a contract that ran until June 2019.

National team

On November 12, 2008 Gspurning was first called up by team boss Karel Brückner in the squad for the Austrian national team for the friendly international match against Turkey, in which he also made his debut on November 19. This was followed by two more international matches against Romania and Serbia as part of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
