Career
As a player
society
Pogatetz began his career in the offspring of SK Sturm Graz , with whom he signed his first professional contract in May 2000. In the summer he moved to the first division for FC Kärnten , with whom he rose to the highest league in his first season and won the ÖFB Cup . In 2001 the left-footer was signed by Bayer 04 Leverkusen and from there first awarded to FC Aarau and in spring 2003 to the Grazer AK . With the GAK he became Austrian champion and cup winner under coach Walter Schachner ; he also found his traditional position there on the left in the back four. In spring 2005 he was loaned to Spartak Moscow for a few games .
During the summer break of 2005, Pogatetz signed a contract that ran until June 2010 with the English UEFA Cup starter FC Middlesbrough . In June 2005 he inflicted a double fracture on the Russian player Jaroslaw Charitonski with a foul and was suspended for an initial 24 games. In a further negotiation, the sentence was reduced to eight competitive games and Pogatetz became an integral part of Middlesbrough FC, where he was increasingly used as a left central defender despite great competition. Since the beginning of the 2006 season he played in this position. On January 31, 2006, he scored 1-0 in the 19th minute of the 3-0 win against Sunderland FC . This made him the first Austrian to score a goal in the English Premier League . From the 2007/08 season he was team captain .
For the 2010/11 season , Hannover 96 signed Pogatetz. He signed a contract that ran until 2013. He made his Bundesliga debut on the first day of the season in a 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt . From the beginning he was a regular with Karim Haggui in the central defense of the Hanoverians. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on October 29, 2011 in the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach . In February 2012, his contract term was extended to June 30, 2015.
For the 2012/13 season , Pogatetz moved to VfL Wolfsburg after he lost his regular place to Mario Eggimann after the winter break of the 2011/12 season and had an additional competitor in Felipe . He signed a contract that ran until 2015. In Wolfsburg he could not prevail and was no longer used after the 8th match day. In order to get more match practice again, he went on loan to the Premier League for the London club West Ham United on January 28, 2013 until the end of the season ; the association also received a purchase option.
For the 2013/14 season he moved to 1. FC Nürnberg . In the first half of the season, Pogatetz played all games from the start and over 90 minutes, with the exception of one game that he had to suspend due to a yellow card. After he was out at the beginning of the spring season due to a ligament injury, he lost his regular place and was rarely used for the full season. At the end of the season, 1. FC Nürnberg was relegated from the Bundesliga ; Pogatetz's contract expired. In September 2014 he went to the United States to join the Columbus Crew . In January 2016 he returned to Germany for the second division club 1. FC Union Berlin . He signed a contract that ran until the end of the season.
For the 2017/18 season he returned to Austria and joined the Bundesliga club LASK . His contract was valid until June 2020.
National team
On May 18, 2002 Pogatetz made his debut under team boss Hans Krankl in the Austrian national team in the game against Germany .
On September 9, 2006 he was temporarily excluded from the national team by the ÖFB after public criticism of coach Josef Hickersberger after a defeat against Venezuela . He was called up by Hickersberger in the squad for the European Championship 2008 . By changing the FIFA regulations, Pogatetz was able to serve a suspension of two games in friendly international matches. As a result, he was eligible to play for the EURO 2008. On March 26, 2009, Pogatetz was appointed the new captain of the Austrian national team by team boss Dietmar Constantini . In March 2010 he was replaced in this role by Marc Janko .
Under team boss Marcel Koller , Pogatetz was still used regularly in the 2014 World Cup qualification, which in the end narrowly missed , but then lost his regular place to Martin Hinteregger . Also because of his move to the USA he was no longer called up by Koller in the 2016 European Championship qualification . Pogatetz played his last international match in a friendly against the Czech Republic on June 3, 2014.
As a trainer
In January 2020 he switched to the second-class farm team of LASK, FC Juniors OÖ , where he was to act as an individual trainer. He would also have been eligible to play as a player. In July 2020 he was promoted to defensive coach with the first team under Neo-head coach Dominik Thalhammer .
