René Aufhauser (born June 21, 1976 in Voitsberg , Styria ) is a former Austrian football player and current coach . The former national player is assistant coach at FC Red Bull Salzburg under Jesse Marsch . Since his engagement in Salzburg , he has lived with his partner and sons near the state capital.

Career

From amateur player to master footballer in Salzburg

René Aufhauser began playing football in the offspring of his home club in Köflach and switched to regional league team ASK Voitsberg at the age of 19 . In the Voitsberger fighting team , he was mostly used in the position of a defensive midfielder and already convinced there with his talent and his move on goal. In addition to his work as an amateur footballer, the budding electrical engineer attended the HTL Weiz , lived for five years in the Kolping House as a boarding school student and successfully completed his training with the Matura .

René Aufhauser was discovered at the age of 20 by Werner Gregoritsch . At the time, he was in charge of the Styrian amateur team and became aware of the talented midfielder. Gregoritsch gave his friend Heribert Weber the tip to see the Köflacher at a competition game. In the autumn of 1996 Weber watched the young regional league kicker in a game of the Styrian amateur team in Graz and was enthusiastic about Aufhauser's performance, especially his urge as a defensive player to keep going into the attack. On the same day he contacted Aufhauser and promised him a job with the Bundesliga club Salzburg. On January 1st, 1997 René Aufhauser signed his first professional contract with SV Austria Salzburg . Within six months, the former amateur kicker developed into the U-21 national team scorer and an indispensable part of the Salzburg master squad, which included well-known players such as Feiersinger , Konrad , Ibertsberger , Hütter , Kogler , Kocijan , Lainer and Prosenik .

He made his debut in the Austrian Bundesliga at the start of the season on March 1, 1997, when his team beat SCN FC Admira / Wacker at the Lehen stadium 4-0 . Heribert Weber pushed his new young star and used him in 17 of the 18 games of the spring round, ten of them from the beginning. At the end of the 1996/97 season René Aufhauser was at the top of the table with Salzburg and celebrated his first Austrian championship title , to which he also contributed two goals. In the summer of the same year he also won the Supercup with the Mozartstadt team .

Although Salzburg did not achieve any major successes in the following years due to the many departures of former European Cup heroes and championship footballers, he managed to keep his form constantly under Weber's successors Krankl and Miro Polak and develop into a leading player, star and crowd favorite. After the engagement of the Swede Hans Backe as head coach, the situation changed fundamentally for the header specialist. Under Cheek he lost the star player's aura in the 2000/01 season and found himself often only on the bench, which made him feel restricted by the new coach in his personal development. Aufhauser felt that he would not be able to develop any further in Salzburg and tried to change clubs by himself.

Flying high with the GAK

After receiving the offer from his former sponsor Werner Gregoritsch to play for the Grazer AK, René Aufhauser moved to the Mur metropolis during the summer break in 2001. In Graz he had to fight for the role of the leading player at the beginning with Ales Čeh , then captain of the Slovenian national team. Gregoritsch let the two rotate, his successors Libregts and Schachner trusted more and more in Aufhauser, and when Čeh left Graz in summer 2003, he had completely lost his place in the regular formation to Aufhauser. In 2001/02 he achieved his first successes with the Grazer Rotjacken with victories in the ÖFB Cup and Super Cup . Under the new coach Walter Schachner , the GAK developed into a serious title contender and in 2003 took second place in the championship. According to his own statements, Walter Schachner gave him “football theory in absolute perfection” . René Aufhauser experienced the high point of his career so far in the 2003/04 season when he and the Grazers celebrated their first championship title in their club's history as well as the cup victory. Aufhauser is also a GAK record national player with 25 appearances in the ÖFB team during his time with the athletes.

Despite good performances in Salzburg, René Aufhauser was not considered under the former team boss Herbert Prohaska . It was only under Otto Barić that he was called up as a GAK player in the national team for the first time in 2001 , but was only on the bench in the home game against Liechtenstein . The Styrian celebrated his debut in the Austrian national soccer team under Baric's successor Hans Krankl on March 27, 2002 in a game against Slovakia . Under Hans Krankl, the Styrian became a fixture in the national team. With his strong international games, especially at the GAK in the Champions League qualification and in the UEFA Cup of the 2004/05 game year - he was, for example, significantly involved in the 1-0 away win against the later Champions League winners Liverpool FC - he excited also international sensation. The new Salzburg coach Kurt Jara successfully tried to get the 28-year-old model professional back, who then signed him for FC Red Bull Salzburg in July 2005 . During this time he was also courted by various European clubs, including Fulham FC .

Return to Salzburg, EM 2008 & last years as a professional

For years René Aufhauser had a hard time asserting himself as a regular player in Salzburg, but was ultimately able to win the 2007 championship as the only Austrian who played regularly. The Styrian was one of the regular players in the preparatory games for the 2008 European Championship under ÖFB team boss Josef Hickersberger . In the international match against Trinidad / Tobago (4-1) in Vienna, he scored three goals. On May 27, 2008 René Aufhauser was able to reach 50 international matches against Nigeria and was called up one day later in the Austrian EM squad . At the European Championship, Aufhauser was used in all three games, where he was substituted in the last two group games against Poland and Germany . Against Croatia, he owed the penalty that led to the 1-0 winner by Luka Modrić .

In the season after the European Championship, Aufhauser was back under contract with the bulls. At the end of the season, Aufhauser was able to look forward to his fourth championship title. He appeared 25 times in 36 games for Salzburg and scored two goals.

On February 1, 2010 Aufhauser moved from Salzburg to Bundesliga club LASK Linz . He signed a contract up to and including summer 2011. At the end of the 2010/11 season he rose with the Linzers in the first league , the second highest division in Austria. After LASK did not receive a license for the coming season, however, he signed a one-year contract with the FC Red Bull Salzburg farm team , FC Liefering , who played with the USK Anif license . As captain he was largely responsible for the promotion to the first division. He was also the team's captain in the 2013/14 season and ended his successful football career at the end of the season.

Started as a trainer

After his career as a professional footballer, Aufhauser switched to the supervisory staff of FC Liefering and became assistant coach of the farm team of FC Red Bull Salzburg behind Peter Zeidler , even after Zeidler's involvement as coach of the first team, he remained assistant coach under Thomas Letsch . In 2016 he also moved to FC Red Bull Salzburg as assistant coach under Óscar García .
