Martin Wagner (born February 24, 1968 in Offenburg ) is a former German football player .

Athletic career

Wagner started his career at Offenburg FV . As a professional footballer, he played in the Bundesliga for 1. FC Nürnberg , 1. FC Kaiserslautern and VfL Wolfsburg . He won the 1996 DFB Cup with 1. FC Kaiserslautern . In the final against Karlsruher SC , he scored the goal for the 1-0 victory with a free kick. In the same season he was relegated from the Bundesliga with FCK. After this relegation Wagner decided to continue playing in Kaiserslautern. Shortly after relegation, Otto Rehhagel became the coach of 1. FC Kaiserslautern. In 1997 Wagner was promoted to the Bundesliga with the club and became German champion in 1998 - the only time so far that a promoted team has managed to win the title. For the 2000/01 season Wagner moved to VfL Wolfsburg, but was only able to play two games there due to an injury and ended his career after the season. He played a total of 271 games in the upper house of German football.

National team

Wagner made his debut for the German national team on December 16, 1992 against Brazil . In 1994 national coach Berti Vogts added him to the squad for the 1994 World Cup . Before the tournament, he was tested in the games against Ireland and Canada . In the USA itself, Wagner played against Belgium (3: 2) in the round of 16 and against Bulgaria (1: 2) in the quarter-finals . Wagner played on the left side of the defensive midfield alongside Guido Buchwald and Thomas Berthold and behind Matthias Sammer . His last of six international matches was played against Hungary on October 12, 1994 in a goalless draw in Budapest .

Further career

After his active playing career, Wagner worked as a players agent and represented a number of German and international footballers. In May 2014, it was announced that Wagner had skin cancer and had undergone radiation therapy.
