Gian-Luca Waldschmidt (born May 19, 1996 in Siegen ) is a German football player . The striker is under contract with Benfica Lisbon in Portugal and is a senior international .

family

Luca Waldschmidt is the son of Wolfgang Waldschmidt (* 1962), who played 14 second division games for SV Darmstadt 98 in the 1983/84 season .

Career

Waldschmidt began his career in 2001 at SSV Oranien Frohnhausen and then played for SSC Juno Burg before moving to TSG Wieseck in 2009. On July 1, 2010, he went to the Eintracht Frankfurt youth training center .

On April 25, 2014 Waldschmidt signed his first professional contract there with a term until June 30, 2017. He was promoted to the professional squad for the 2014/15 season , but should still be used in the U19. On April 25, 2015, he made his Bundesliga debut in the 2-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund , where he came on for Sonny Kittel in the 73rd minute . Waldschmidt scored his first competitive goal on August 8, 2015 in a 3-0 win in the first round of the DFB Cup against Bremer SV .

For the 2016/17 season , Waldschmidt moved to Hamburger SV , where he signed a four-year contract. He made his Bundesliga debut for Hamburg in the 4-0 home defeat to RB Leipzig when he came on for Bobby Wood in the 83rd minute . He scored his first competitive goal for HSV on October 25, 2016 in a 4-0 win against Halleschen FC in the second round of the DFB Cup, a few seconds after being substituted on in the 82nd minute of the game. On the last match day of the season, Waldschmidt scored the 2-1 winner against direct rivals VfL Wolfsburg in the 87th minute - a good two minutes after being substituted on - and thus prevented HSV from having to play the relegation for the third time in four years. It was his first goal in the Bundesliga. In the following season , in which Waldschmidt scored a goal in 21 missions, he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with HSV .

For the 2018/19 season, Waldschmidt switched to SC Freiburg by means of an exit clause . In his first season in Breisgau , he scored 9 goals in 30 league games. In the following season, the offensive player missed several season games due to injury after he had also been used more often on the wings and was able to contribute ten points scorer to the 8th place in the table in Freiburg. In both seasons Waldschmidt competed with Nils Petersen and was therefore often used as a substitute.

For the 2020/21 season, the striker moved to the Portuguese Primeira Liga to Benfica Lisbon for 15 million euros , where he played with his compatriot Julian Weigl . Waldschmidt signed a five-year contract that includes an exit clause of 88 million euros.

National team

Waldschmidt played twice for the German U16 national team and scored three goals. For the U17 selection he was successful four times in eight appearances. On August 14, 2013, he played his first game for the U19 national team in the 3-2 defeat against Hungary . On May 28, 2014, Waldschmidt played against Switzerland for the U18 selection . In July 2015 , Waldschmidt took part in the U19 European Championship in Greece , but failed with the team in the preliminary round.

On September 3, 2015, Waldschmidt played for the U20 national team for the first time in a 2-0 win in the friendly match in Italy . He played a total of six games in this age group. On August 25, 2017, Waldschmidt was invited to the German U21 national team for the first time by U21 national coach Stefan Kuntz with the nomination for the test match in Paderborn against Hungary and for the European Championship qualifier in Osnabrück against Kosovo . His debut for the U21s followed in the 2-1 defeat against Hungary, in which he was on the field for 63 minutes. At the 2019 U21 European Championship , Waldschmidt scored seven goals, including the goal of the month for June in the group game against Austria with a long shot . Only the Swede Marcus Berg had achieved seven tournament goals before him . In the final, Waldschmidt and his team lost 2-1 to Spain .

For the European Championship qualifiers on September 6 and 9, 2019 against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland, national coach Joachim Löw nominated the striker for the first time for the senior national team . Waldschmidt made his debut on October 8, 2019 in Dortmund in a 2-2 test match against the national team of Argentina from the start.
