Marcelle Chantal (born February 9, 1901 in Paris ; † March 11, 1960 there ) was a French actress and singer .

Life

Marcelle Chantal was born as Marcelle Jenny Chantal Pannier (or Chantal-Pannier) and the daughter of a wealthy banker. She was supposed to begin a film career at the age of fifteen, but this proposal by Marcel L'Herbier , who was friends with the Pannier family, did not meet with her mother's approval.

On April 5, 1921, she became engaged to the racing team owner Jefferson Davis Cohn . She then got permission to come back to L'Herbier's suggestion and in 1919 she shot Le Carnaval des vérités . In the following years she worked at various theaters in Paris.

In 1929 she received the role of Countess de la Motte as Marcelle Jefferson-Cohn in L'affaire du collier de la reine based on the novel by Dumas . This marked her breakthrough in the film business; within the next decade she was extremely busy as a film actress. The marriage with Cohn, however, ended in divorce during this time. During the Second World War she was in Switzerland. After returning to France, she was unable to build on her earlier successes. She withdrew into private life. Marcelle Chantal died of cancer and was buried in the Montmartre cemetery.
