Jefferson Davis Cohn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jefferson Davis Cohn (* 1881 in London , † 1951 in Manhattan ) was a British entrepreneur, racing stable owner and horse breeder.

Life

Jefferson Davis Cohn was the son of Anita and Herrmann Cohn, who married in 1876, and was named after Jefferson Davis . He had three siblings. At an early age he occupied himself with racehorses; he had his first winner at the age of 14.

He worked in the railway business, where he owned the majority of the shares in the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons Lits in France, drove the development of Thomas Cook in England and in 1922 bought a necklace for Empress Maria Theresa for £ 200,000 .

The millionaire also traded in works of art; Among other things, the bird catchers of François Boucher and Master John Heathcote of Thomas Gainsborough belonged to him at times .

Most of all, however, he was concerned with racehorses. In 1914 he bought the stallion Teddy for 5,400 francs. This was a stroke of luck for his horse breeding; Teddy became the father of Bull Dog , Sir Gallahad III , Ortello , Rose of England , Asterus and La Troienne, among others . Cohn ran the Haras du Bois Roussel in Alençon for about two decades and was one of the most successful horse breeders and racing stable owners of his time. He owned successful racehorses such as Plucky Liege , Le Traquet , Vatout , Imaginaire , King Arthur , Lion Hearted and Slipper .

In 1934 he sold the stud to Léon Volterra .

In 1940 he lived in Palm Beach . He died in his apartment in the Frederick Gebhard House at number 6 on 79th Street in Manhattan.

relationship

His first marriage was in 1903 with Florence Bottomley, daughter of Elise and Horatio Bottomley from The Dicker in Sussex .

In 1929 his second wife (* 1901, † 1960) was busy shooting the first exclusively French historical film. She played the Comtesse de la Motte in the film adaptation of Dumas' La collier de la reine . This was the first time the French government allowed Versailles and Petit Trianon to be used as a film set. In early 1931, Jefferson Davis Cohn and Marcelle Jenny Favrel Cohn, also known as Marcelle Chantal , were divorced.

Jefferson Davis Cohn had a son named Jack with the wife of Herbert Stern, who called himself Baron Michelham of Hellingly.
