Bobby Shou Wood (born November 15, 1992 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is an American football player who is under contract with Hamburger SV and is active in the US national team .

Career

In the club

youth

Bobby Wood was the son of an African American and a Japanese woman in Hawaiian Honolulu and grew up in California, Irvine , where he remained until 2007 at the Irvine Strikers played football. On July 1, 2007, he went to Europe and came to the youth training center and boarding school of the German second division club TSV 1860 Munich . He also attended the Munich International School in Starnberg . After initial difficulties, which were mainly due to the language barrier, he established himself in the youth teams of the sixties . In the 2009/10 season he was the third striker behind Kevin Volland and Markus Ziereis in the A-Youth of TSV 1860, he played 19 times in the A-Junior Bundesliga and scored one goal. In the final phase of the season he sat on the bench of the U23 in the Regionalliga Süd several times . On May 12, he finally made his senior debut there when he was substituted on for the game at Eintracht Frankfurt II.

In the summer of 2010, his strike partners Volland and Ziereis were nominally appointed to the professional squad of 1860 Munich. After Wood had been used in the first five games of the A-Jugend and had scored two goals, he made his season debut in the U23 on September 26 in the game for the second team of TSG Hoffenheim . A week later he was on the starting line-up for the first time in the away game at SpVgg Weiden and also scored his first goal for the TSV U23. On October 9, he played for the first time for the second division team of TSV 1860; he was substituted on at half-time in a friendly in Krakow . Until the winter break, he was used six times in the U23 and scored one goal. He played three more games for the U19s, scoring twice.

Beginnings in professional football

in the training of TSV 1860 Munich (2011)

On January 17, 2011, Wood started training again with the U23 of 1860 Munich after the winter break. Two days later he was promoted to the second division squad by professional trainer Reiner Maurer . During the game against VfL Osnabrück on January 21, 2011, he was in the squad of the second division team for the first time. A week later, Wood made his second Bundesliga debut in the game against MSV Duisburg on January 29 , when he was substituted on in the closing stages.

At the beginning of the new season he was mostly part of the matchday squad, but was not used. In September and October he played seven times for the U23 in the Regionalliga Süd and scored two goals. In October he was also used for the professionals three times in the league and once in the DFB Cup .

In March 2012 he came to three missions for the U23. On March 23, he was back in the professional squad for the first time, after which he was operated on again on his knee, which meant he was again longer out. His contract with 1860 Munich ended on June 30, 2012 and was initially not renewed due to his vulnerability to injury. At the insistence of Alexander Schmidt , the new coach of the second team, who had already coached Wood in his youth, he was given a new one-year contract in early July. In the 2012/13 season, he was only to be used for the second team, which had been U21 since the beginning of the new season, in the newly created Bavarian Regional League . However, after Reiner Maurer's dismissal, Schmidt became the new head coach of the professional squad, who subsequently pulled Wood back up to the professionals. On November 24, 2012, he made his comeback in the 2nd Bundesliga against 1. FC Union Berlin . On December 14, 2012, Wood finally signed a professional contract that ran until 2016. In the second half of the season he was a regular substitute in the 2nd Bundesliga and played several times for the U21s.

For 1860 he was used in 21 games in the 2013/14 season . He did not play any of the games over 90 minutes, mostly coming on in the closing stages. He didn't score a goal, he prepared two goals. In August 2014 he was on the starting line-up as a winger in all five competitive games and prepared two goals. After shortly before the end of the transfer window with Valdet Rama and Rodri two more offensive players had been committed, Wood lost his regular place again.

After his return to Munich, he played for TSV 1860 for the last time on October 19th. Shortly afterwards, he was excluded from the first team's game and training operations for disciplinary reasons and from then on trained with the U21s.

Via Aue to Union Berlin

At the end of January 2015, thanks to Klinsmann's mediation, Wood moved to FC Erzgebirge Aue in the 2nd Bundesliga shortly before the end of the winter transfer period until the end of the season . Wood initially belonged to the regular team and scored his first two goals for Aue on February 13 in the away win at Fortuna Düsseldorf . A week later he tore an inner ligament in his right knee and could not be used for eight weeks. In the last six games of the season he was used again, he scored one goal and prepared another. At the end of the season, FC Erzgebirge Aue finished 17th and was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga. As a result of the descent, his contract term was not extended, as provided for in a clause, instead his contract with TSV 1860 remained valid.

After Wood had announced that he no longer wanted to play for TSV 1860, he left Munich during the preparation for the season and signed a three-year contract with second division competitor 1. FC Union Berlin . In his only season at Union he scored most of his team with 17 goals from 31 games and the third most of the second division season - only Bochum's Simon Terodde (25 goals) and Freiburg's Nils Petersen (21 goals) scored more often.

Hamburger SV

For the 2016/17 season , Wood moved to Bundesliga club Hamburger SV , with whom he received a contract that ran until June 30, 2020. In the 1: 1 match against FC Ingolstadt 04 on matchday one - his Bundesliga debut - Wood scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 30th minute with the goal to make it 1-0. On the ninth matchday in the 3-0 game against 1. FC Köln on October 30, 2016, he was sent off in the 56th minute of the game after an assault. In his first Bundesliga season Wood developed into a regular player and scored five goals in 28 games. In the cup he was successful four times in four games. In the DFB-Pokal, HSV was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Borussia Mönchengladbach and in the league, being fourth in the table, a 2-1 win on the last day of the match against VfL Wolfsburg secured relegation. Before the 2017/18 season, he extended his contract term to June 30, 2021. He made 24 league appearances and was only able to score two goals, one of which was from a penalty. At the end of the season he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with HSV.

Hannover 96

For the 2018/19 season, Wood moved to Hannover 96 on loan for a year . There was then a purchase option. Wood could not prevail in Hanover either. Under the head coaches André Breitenreiter and Thomas Doll , he made 20 Bundesliga appearances in which he scored 3 goals. From mid-March, Wood fell out with knee problems until the end of the season. As in the previous year, he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with his club. Wood then left Hannover 96 with the end of his contract.

Return to HSV

For the season 2019/20 returned to Wood Hamburger SV back in the pre-season had missed the direct resurgence. Under head coach Dieter Hecking , he was mostly a reservist in the first half of the season behind Lukas Hinterseer and Martin Harnik . After being substituted on four times, Wood came on the 14th and 15th matchdays during Hintersee's injury-related absence to two starting eleven appearances, in which he was replaced after a poor performance. He was back on the bench until the winter break, but was not substituted on. Another striker was signed in January in Joel Pohjanpalo (loan from Bayer 04 Leverkusen until the end of the season ). Then he was only twice in the matchday squad until the end of the season without being substituted on.

At the international Cor Groenewegen tournament in Uitgeest , he was part of the US squad; he scored two goals in the tournament. At the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in 2011 in Guatemala , he injured his knee and was out until the end of the season.

In November he took part in a course with the US U23s . There he was used in the game against the U21s of Azerbaijan . Wood returned from the course with another knee injury and was operated on in Munich.

Wood made his US national team debut on August 14, 2013 when he came on as a substitute in the final minutes of the 4-3 win in Bosnia-Herzegovina . The then coach of the national team, Jürgen Klinsmann , did not consider him for the United States' squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and only used him on October 11, 2014 in a 1-1 draw against Ecuador . On June 5, 2015, Wood scored his first international goal with a 4-3 winning goal in Amsterdam against the Netherlands . He was not taken into account for the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015 , but a year later Wood was part of the USA squad at the Copa América Centenario 2016 in the USA and scored one goal in five appearances. In October 2017, he missed participation with the US national team in the 2018 World Cup in Russia on the last matchday of the qualifying round .
