Stephan Kofi Ambrosius (born December 18, 1998 in Hamburg ) is a German - Ghanaian soccer player who is under contract with Hamburger SV .

Family and origin

Ambrosius was born to Ghanaian parents in Hamburg and grew up in the south of the Wilhelmsburg district . His older brother Michael (* 1996) is also a soccer player.

Career

Ambrose began his career in the youth of the FC St. Pauli and moved in 2012 into the youth academy of Hamburger SV . At HSV he went through all youth teams until 2017 and played a. a. in the B-Juniors and A-Juniors Bundesliga . For the 2017/18 season Ambrosius moved up to the second men's team (U21) and developed into a regular player in central defense in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nord .

At the beginning of February 2018, Ambrosius was promoted to the professional squad by Bernd Hollerbach . On February 10, 2018, he was in the matchday squad for a Bundesliga game for the first time , but was not substituted in in the 2-0 defeat of HSV at Borussia Dortmund . He made his Bundesliga debut on March 31, 2018 in the away game under Christian Titz , who had coached the second team until the beginning of March, against VfB Stuttgart , when he was part of the starting eleven and was substituted at half-time. Until the end of the season there was no further use in the professional team, which was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . For the second team he was used in 20 games and scored one goal.

For the 2018/19 season , Ambrosius signed a professional contract that runs until June 30, 2021. In the first half of the season he was the fourth fit regular central defender behind Rick van Drongelen , David Bates and Léo Lacroix and did not play in the 2nd Bundesliga either at Titz or under his successor Hannes Wolf , instead he played once in the DFB Cup and 15 -time in the second team in the Regionalliga Nord. In December 2018, Ambrosius tore a cruciate ligament and was out until the end of the season.

In the summer preparation for 2019, Ambrosius was transferred to the second team by the new head coach Dieter Hecking . There he immediately established himself again as a regular player. In February Ambrosius returned to training with the second division team, as Gideon Jung was needed in defensive midfield after Adrian Fein's injury and only Ewerton was available next to the regular central defenders Rick van Drongelen and Timo Letschert . After Jung received the yellow-red card on the 24th matchday and Ewerton injured himself long-term, Ambrosius was back in the first team's squad for the first time on the 25th matchday. On the last day of the match he came to his only season appearance in the second half. In the regional league, on the other hand, Ambrosius made 17 appearances (15 times from the start) until the end of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
