Career

society

David Bates was born in the Scottish port city of Kirkcaldy in 1996 . He started playing soccer in his hometown with the Raith Rovers . For the Rovers , he played in the respective youth teams until 2013 before making his debut in the first team. For his hometown club he played ten second division games as a central defender and won the Challenge Cup in 2014 . In 2015, Bates was loaned to fourth division East Stirlingshire and third division Brechin City . In August 2016, the 20-year-old Bates was awarded to the Glasgow Rangers , who also acquired the transfer rights in January 2017 and provided him with a contract that runs until June 30, 2018.

After his contract expired, Bates moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for Hamburger SV for the 2018/19 season . He received a contract with the Bundesliga relegated team until June 30, 2022. Bates made his competitive debut for Hamburg in the season opener against Holstein Kiel on August 3, 2018 . In the 1: 2 away defeat against Jahn Regensburg (23rd matchday), he scored his first competitive goal for Hamburg when he met the interim lead. On matchday 33, Bates suffered a partial rupture of the inner ligament in his left ankle in the away defeat against SC Paderborn 07 and was not available to HSV for around two months. In his first season for HSV, Bates played 25 games and, with Rick van Drongelen, formed the Hamburg core team. The club missed a direct return to the Bundesliga in 4th place.

For the 2019/20 season , HSV signed two more central defenders, Ewerton and Timo Letschert . On the first two match days, Bates was not in the matchday squad under the new head coach Dieter Hecking . At the beginning of August he moved to the English second division team Sheffield Wednesday on loan until the end of the EFL Championship season 2019/20 . There Bates was only used once in the League Cup until the season break due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 . After the game was resumed in mid-June, Sheffield Wednesday announced that Bates would leave the club according to the contract at the end of the month and thus before the end of the season.

For training starting in early August Bates was from HSV released and then for the season 2020/21 to the Belgian first division club Cercle Bruges awarded.

National team

In September 2018, Bates made his Scottish U21 debut against Andorra , qualifying for the 2019 European Championship . In other qualifying games he was also used against the Netherlands , Ukraine and England . In November 2018, Bates was appointed by Alex McLeish for the first time in the senior team for the Nations League games against Albania and Israel . He made his international debut in the 4-0 away win in Albania, where he was on the field for the full season. On the following day of play - a 3-2 win against Israel - Bates also played the full 90 minutes. So he had a share in the promotion to League B of the UEFA Nations League , which was made perfect with this victory.
