Escape to Germany

Jatta claims to have grown up in Gambia without parents . He came to Germany from the West African state in the course of the refugee crisis in 2015 through the Sahara , across the Mediterranean and Italy . There he was accepted into the academy of the former boxer Lothar Kannenberg - a youth welfare and educational institution - in Bothel, Lower Saxony, near Bremen . The Academy gave Jatta, which according to his own account until then only occasionally on weekends in a kind of football school and otherwise on the street football had played a trial at the A-youth of Werder Bremen . He was used for SV Werder in a test match between a selection of youth players and the second team from Hannover 96 . Werder Bremen then offered Jatta a preliminary contract , which Jatta refused because only a permanent employment relationship would have secured him a residence permit when he came of age in June 2016.

“I didn't play in any club in Africa, that didn't exist there, at most on weekends you could take part in supervised training. Otherwise we were on our own, we played football on the street and taught ourselves things. "

- Bakery Jatta at his introduction

Professional at Hamburger SV

At the beginning of January 2016, Jatta completed a two-day trial training session with the Bundesliga professionals at Hamburger SV and, according to coach Bruno Labbadia, made a good impression. Since an initial registration of a minor player who is not a citizen of the country in which he would like to be registered for the first time is inadmissible, he was not initially allowed to be obliged. As a result, Jatta trained with his individual trainer and in the evening took part in the training of the league club Bremer SV ; at the same time he went to school and learned German . A week after his 18th birthday, Jatta signed a three-year contract with HSV on June 13, 2016, which ensured worldwide coverage. In August 2016 he received a residence permit linked to the employment relationship until his contract expired in 2019. Jatta did not apply for asylum .

At the beginning of September 2016, he received his license to play competitive games. A few days later, Jatta scored both goals in his competitive debut for the second team in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nord in the 2-0 win against BSV Rehden and a week later also two goals in the 3-1 win against VfV 06 Hildesheim . On October 30, 2016, he was in the first team of Hamburger SV for the first time in a competitive match at the away game against 1. FC Köln . Jatta made his Bundesliga debut under Markus Gisdol on April 16, 2017 in the 2-1 away defeat against Werder Bremen , when he was substituted on in the closing stages. In total, Jatta completed 6 Bundesliga games in his first year at HSV without scoring and 16 regional league games in which he scored 11 goals.

In the 2017/18 season , Jatta made 10 Bundesliga appearances under coaches Markus Gisdol, Bernd Hollerbach and Christian Titz . In addition, he played 10 times in the second team, in which he scored 8 goals. After HSV was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga , Jatta only came on for one substitute under Titz at the beginning of the 2018/19 season and played 11 times in the Regionalliga Nord (one goal). After Hannes Wolf took over the team at the end of October 2018, he played in the 8 remaining games until the winter break (5 times in the starting XI) and scored 2 goals. During the winter break, Jatta extended his contract, which expired at the end of the season, until June 30, 2024, which also extended his residence permit in Germany accordingly. Even after the winter break, Jatta maintained his regular position, so that at the end of the season he had a total of 25 second division appearances (19 times from the start), in which he scored 4 goals. HSV reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup with him for the first time since 2009 , with Jatta equalizing in the 3-1 defeat against RB Leipzig . In the league, the HSV missed the direct rise with fourth place.

In the national team

At the beginning of September 2019, the head coach of the German U21 national team , Stefan Kuntz , said that there were plans to support Jatta with naturalization . He would then have been eligible to play for the 2020 Olympic Games and the 2021 European Under-21 Championship . At the end of October 2019, however, the DFB decided against this project.

At the end of October 2019 he was nominated by Tom Saintfiet for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches for the Gambian national team in November. Jatta did not accept the nomination.

Identity controversy

After the trial training at Hamburger SV in January 2016, doubts arose about the age of what he said was 17-year-old. Investigations at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf showed that Jatta's biological development had already been completed. The then HSV sports director Peter Knäbel announced that there was no doubt about the age.

On August 7, 2019, Sport Bild published the results of its research , which suggested that Jatta entered Germany in 2015 under a false identity and pretended to be three years younger. Accordingly, Jatta is the Gambian soccer player Bakary Daffeh (* 1995), who has played for various clubs in Gambia (including Brikama United ), Nigeria and Senegal, as well as in the Gambia's U20 national team. At the time of his entry, he would have been 19 years of age and thus of legal age and would not have been able to receive his leave of absence as an unaccompanied minor refugee to protect him from deportation . Two Gambian coaches recognized Daffeh in photos of the HSV player. In addition, no further game for Daffeh can be proven beyond 2015.

Hamburger SV was already aware of the research a week earlier, which is why the club asked Jatta about the allegations. He stuck to his portrayal of having entered Germany as a minor refugee, not being Bakary Daffeh and never having played organized football before. In addition, the HSV when asked DFL after the eligibility Jattas. According to the DFL, valid documents are available, which is why nothing changes in the eligibility to play. After the publication of Sport Bild , the DFB control committee and the immigration authority responsible for Jatta , the district office of Hamburg-Mitte , started investigations.

Hamburger SV stood behind Jatta and demanded that the DFB and DFL position themselves clearly and as quickly as possible in order to ensure that the cup and point game competition was run in a legally secure manner. The HSV emphasized that Jatta had had a valid passport and a playing permit for three years and announced that he would continue to fully plan his training and match operations. The DFL then confirmed Jatta's eligibility to play until the matter was finally resolved.

On August 9, 2019, Der Spiegel reported , citing documents from Football Leaks , that HSV had already investigated the doubts regarding Jatta's identity in January 2016. According to this, a player adviser pointed out to an HSV employee that he had learned from reliable sources that Jatta's real name was Bakary Daffeh . When trying to investigate the clues, the employee could not find any evidence that could incriminate or exonerate Jatta.

On the same day, the Hamburger Abendblatt reported that, according to the Senator for the Interior of Bremen , Jatta initially entered the country without a valid passport in the summer of 2015 . He then applied for a passport in Gambia, which was sent to Germany by post and had January 27, 2016 as the date of issue. At the request of the Bremen Migration Office, the Honorary Consulate General of the Republic of Gambia in Cologne confirmed the issue of the new passport. According to the player pass with which Jatta was granted international approval by the Gambia Football Federation for Hamburger SV , he was listed as a player for Brikama United from February 1, 2014 to 2016 . This corresponds to the data in the Transfer Registration System (TRS) of FIFA: Jatta was registered with Brikama United from February 1, 2014 to June 30, 2016, Daffeh until November 2013.

The 1. FC Nürnberg (0: 4, 2nd Round), the VfL Bochum (0: 1, 3. Round) and the Karlsruher SC (2: 4, 4. Round) laid an objection to the scoring of their defeat against Hamburg , in which Jatta was used, on the grounds that his eligibility to play was ineffective due to a different identity.

On September 2, 2019, the Hamburg-Mitte district office closed the investigation against Jatta, as the documents available did not provide any reliable evidence. Shortly afterwards, 1. FC Nürnberg, VfL Bochum and Karlsruher SC withdrew their objections.

On September 19, 2019, Bild / Sport Bild reported that Jatta had given the name Bakary Daffeh in his email address to the Bremen authorities in 2015 . The social center Gröpelingen / Walle submitted copies of Jatta's personal form to the Bremen police on September 3, 2019, with the note that there were major inconsistencies in the case. When asked by Norddeutscher Rundfunk , the Bremen public prosecutor's office confirmed the renewed examination of the facts. A few weeks later, however, it announced that it would not investigate; the case is closed from their point of view.

Beginning in July 2020 was at Jatta on suspicion of violating the residence law a search warrant made because it is suspected that he could have made incorrect statements regarding his identity in order to obtain a residence permit. The investigation had shown that Jatta had contact with people who are more likely to be associated with Daffeh.
