He then completed an apprenticeship as a butcher's journeyman and did his military service. After six months of alcohol therapy (as a participant), he married in 1983. In 1986, Kannenberg began his boxing career and boxed for CSC Frankfurt in the 1st Bundesliga; In 1990 he became Hesse champions (amateurs) in the heavyweight division.
After these successes, Kannenberg became addicted again. He worked temporarily as a doorman and went through stays in psychiatry. After a successful cancer operation in 1996, he began drug withdrawal therapy and moved to Kassel . There he worked untrained as a street worker .
In 1999 he founded the boxing camp Philippinenhof Kassel , an educational aid facility. In the same year he completed a boxing trainer's training with the C license, and in 2001 the B license followed. In 2004, the club through boxing in life and the youth welfare organization training camp Lothar Kannenberg was founded .
For his voluntary work he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and the German Prize for Crime Prevention 2009.
Training camp
The nonprofit youth welfare institution has set itself the goal of drug-addicted and / or criminal youth aged 14 to 17 years rehabilitate . Kannenberg developed its own educational concept for youth welfare . As a rule, the young people have a structured daily routine for six months from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., which is combined with a lot of sport, behavioral training, work projects, crafts and music. The facility is 3.5 kilometers from the nearest town and is located on the edge of the forest. The training camp consists of several log houses and a large outdoor area. The concept is to build fixed structures and rules, as well as to cope with aggression with sport and work. The young people should learn to respect their fellow citizens, which is why the camp educators are also called “respect trainers”.
The recidivism rate is 20%, according Can Berg's own assessment, in normal juvenile justice she would be just under 80%. The concept is described by various politicians from all parties as useful, exemplary and extremely successful. Numerous politicians from home and abroad meet with Kannenberg to find out more about the concept.
Since July 2008 the Lothar Kannenberg training camp has been evaluated in a research project by the Institute for Social Pedagogy and Sociology of Age at the University of Kassel . The evaluation is financed by the carrier association Durchboxen eV and the Hessian Ministry for Labor, Family and Health . With the help of “ empirical social research , the concept is to be systematically prepared, its effects determined and its mechanisms of action made visible.” In December 2009, the researchers published a first interim report. The following findings / tendencies were made after almost two years:
- The relapse rate of adolescents who completed the training camp to the end is 59.1%. In relation to other educational assistance and justice offers, the rate is within the expected range.
- Measured by the severity and number of offenses, they tend not to return to the level of the time before the training camp of these young people who have relapsed.
- Studies with normal investigation phases of 5–7 years and long-term studies are not available.
