The Paul Dierichs Foundation (also spelled the Paul Dierichs Foundation ) existed from 1976 to 2003 and was based in Kassel . The foundation named after him, established by Paul Dierichs (1901–1996), the editor and publisher of the Hessische / Niedersächsische Allgemeine (HNA) at the time, had the aim of promoting social coexistence, especially in the area of personal experience and responsibility Citizen.

history

The founder Dierichs promoted science, art and social engagement, especially in North Hesse, and was among the pioneers of the Kassel University, founded in 1970 . With the foundation he set up in 1976, he wanted to promote civic responsibility and publicize exemplary engagement of individuals or groups. His motive for founding the foundation was: "Promote examples and thereby help to find new ones." The foundation focused primarily on this North Hesse and South Lower Saxony extensive distribution area of the HNA, which Dierichs had developed into one of the most important regional newspapers in the Federal Republic. Since the reunification of Germany , the Paul Dierichs Foundation has also supported initiatives and projects in the neighboring (new) federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia . In addition, Paul Dierichs donated ancient and modern art objects to the city of Bochum and the Kassel State Museums ; For example, his foundation in 1976 enabled the University of Bochum to expand its art collections by purchasing important sculptures of art after 1945 as well as ancient portraits.

After the generation change in the management of the Dierichs media group, Rainer Dierichs (1939–2007) also took over responsibility for the foundation. Rainer Dierichs continued his father's foundation work as a patron and combined it with “the possibilities of a daily newspaper to convey the social value of voluntary work to a large readership”.

The foundation awarded the Paul Dierichs Prize and with it annually honored several individuals or groups who, on their own initiative and unselfishly, had campaigned for the well-being of their fellow human beings and the community and enriched social, political and cultural life. From 1976 to 2001, more than 300 initiatives by citizens in the area where the HNA is distributed were honored for their exemplary commitment.

The prizes were awarded by a board of trustees appointed by the foundation , which included the writer Christine Brückner for a time . The foundation's office was located in the HNA press house in Kassel, and the long-time (full-time) managing director was Wolfgang Mentzel (1927-2010).

The guest of honor at the first award ceremony in January 1977 was the then Hessian Prime Minister Holger Börner ( SPD ). On the occasion of the 10th award ceremony, which took place in Kassel in September 1985, the politician Hildegard Hamm-Brücher (then FDP ) gave a lecture on the subject of “Filling our democracy with humanity”. The keynote speaker at the award ceremony in 2000 was the then Prime Minister of Hesse, Roland Koch ( CDU ). The awarding of the prizes and the winners were reported in detail in press reports and on special pages in the HNA.

The reason for the cessation of the foundation's activities was the takeover of the Dierichs media group in 2002 by the Munich- based Ippen-Gruppe (including publisher of Münchner Merkur ), which led to the publishing activities of the Dierichs family and the foundation's close relationship with the Dierichs publishing house and finished with HNA. The liquidation of the foundation was decided by the foundation's board of trustees in 2003 and ended in 2006.
