UEFA coefficient for national teams

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The UEFA coefficient (officially “coefficient system for national teams”) is a rating system for European national football teams . It is used for the division into different pots in the draw for the EM qualification, the European Championship finals and in the future the Nations League . Furthermore, the UEFA coefficient is used as a ranking criterion for the European Championship group stage in the event of a tie, if neither a direct duel nor a goal difference allow a ranking.

Rating systems

Old rating system (up to EURO 2008)

In the old system, only the results of the two previous qualifications were used for ranking. The coefficient corresponded to the average points received per game.

  • Differences between the old and the new rating system:
    • Taking into account the finals
    • Evaluation duration
    • weighted evaluation of the results

It should be noted that the fixed points per game have no effect on the coefficient, as the points earned are divided by the number of games. They only serve to ensure that poorly ranked nations do not have a negative coefficient. Nevertheless, a negative coefficient is theoretically possible: lost games with a difference of more than 20 goals result in a negative number of points.

Current rating system

All international matches of European national teams in qualifying competitions (including play-offs) and finals of the UEFA European Football Championship and the FIFA World Cup serve as the basis for evaluation . In contrast to the FIFA world rankings , the strength of the opponent does not play a role in the calculation.

The ranking list always refers to the previous 2.5 cycles, with each cycle forming the qualification and final round of a tournament.

For qualifying for EURO 2012 , the 2006 World Cup (qualification and final round), 2008 European Championship (qualification and final round) and qualification for the 2010 World Cup were taken into account. Since the draw for the qualification of a European Championship takes place before the final round of the previous World Cup, its final round cannot be taken into account.

For the final round for EURO 2012, the EM 2008 (qualification and final round), the 2010 World Cup (qualification and final round) and the qualification for the EM 2012 were taken into account.

Scoring

Points are given for each game played in the competitions. There is the following distribution of points:

  • Every completed game gives 10,000 points.
  • A win in regular time or in extra time gives an additional 30,000 points, a draw 10,000 points.
  • Every goal gives 501 points, for every goal conceded 500 are deducted.
  • A win on penalties (play-offs or knockout rounds) gives an additional 10,000 points (so the winning team gets 20,000 and the losing team gets 10,000 points). Hits scored as part of the penalty shoot-out do not give any points.

Example: Team A - Team B 4: 1

  • Team A: 10,000 (game) + 30,000 (win) + 2004 (4 goals) - 500 (1 goal conceded) = 41,504 points
  • Team B: 10,000 (game) + 501 (goal) - 2000 (goals against) = 8,501 points

Since the opponents in the final rounds are on average stronger than in the qualification, there are additional bonus points (regardless of the game result):

  • Playoffs of qualification: each team + 6,000 points
  • Group matches: EM + 9,000, World Cup + 6,000 points
  • Round of 16: + 9,000 points
  • Quarter-finals: + 18,000 points
  • Semi-finals: + 28,000 points
  • Final: + 38,000 points
  • Match for 3rd place: + 18,000 points (World Cup only)

The finalists of the world or European championships receive 93,000 bonus points from the knockout round.

Calculating the coefficient

The points achieved in a cycle are divided by the total number of games played in the cycle and rounded up or down to full points.

More recent results are rated more heavily. The previous half cycle and the last full cycle are each given a factor of 2, the previous full cycle has a factor of 1. The weighted coefficients are added and divided by the sum of the factors (usually 5). The result is again rounded to the nearest whole number of points. The coefficient determined in this way is now used to determine the ranking.

In the case of associations that did not take part in all of the cycles considered, only the cycles completed with the weighting factors are taken into account - e.g. B. Montenegro, which participated for the first time with the qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

Associations which have hosted a final tournament in the last two full cycles and did not participate in the qualification count instead for the qualification of the previous cycle.

Associations hosting an upcoming final tournament will only calculate the coefficient based on the last two full cycles.

Sample calculation : In the following, the UEFA coefficient for Germany for the final round of EURO 2012 is calculated. For this purpose, the games from the qualification for EURO 2012 as well as the qualifications and the finals of the 2010 and EURO 2008 World Cups are taken into account.

The total number of points of each (half) cycle can be determined by determining the numbers from each rating category (such as games, goals, finals) and then multiplying by the point value of the corresponding category and then adding up these products.

As can be seen in the table below, Germany played 6 games in the final round of the European Championship in 2008, of which 4 were won; three of the games were group games, one each a quarter, half and final game. 10 goals were scored and 7 goals conceded had to be accepted. The number of points for the finals of the EM 2008 for Germany is therefore

Coefficient cycle 38,697 40,414 41,353
Weighting cycle 20% 40% 40%
UEFA coefficient 40,446

The score for the other four half cycles is calculated in the same way. The coefficient for a cycle is then obtained by adding the scores of the two half cycles and dividing by the sum of the games, i.e. for the EURO 2008 cycle:

Finally, the coefficients of the cycles determined in this way are weighted so that the more recent results have a greater influence than the older ones:

So the UEFA coefficient for Germany before the EURO 2012 finals is 40,446.
