Alfred Stix

Alfred Stix (born March 22, 1882 in Vienna , † June 29, 1957 ibid) was an Austrian art historian and museum director.

Life

Alfred Stix studied art history, history and classical archeology at the University of Vienna from 1904 to 1908 . In 1908 he received his doctorate under Franz Wickhoff . He then worked as an assistant to Wickhoff until his death in 1909. He then worked at the court library in Vienna. From 1923 to 1933 he was director of the Albertina graphic collection in Vienna. During this time he was also the editor of the art magazine “Belvedere” (1929–32) and editor of the first three volumes of the “Descriptive Catalog of Hand Drawings in the Albertina Graphic Collection” (1926/1928/1933). From 1933 to 1938 he was director of the picture gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum . After Austria's annexation in 1938, he was ousted from office by the National Socialists.

Stix had been general director of the Vienna State Art Collections since 1945, and in 1949 he retired. He was buried at the Sieveringen cemetery .

In 1959 Alfred-Stix-Platz in Vienna- Favoriten (10th district) was named after him.
