August Octavian Julius Perpetuus Maria Karl Josef Ritter von Loehr , from April 10, 1919 August Loehr , (born March 31, 1882 in Vienna , † July 11, 1965 Schönbrunn Palace , ibid) was an Austrian numismatist and money historian.
biography
August Loehr was born in March 1882 as the son of the railway engineer and numismatist August von Loehr and his wife Josefa Maria Fail (d. 1937). He attended the Stiftsgymnasium Seitenstetten and studied from 1900 history, geography and art history at the universities of Vienna , Heidelberg and Grenoble . 1903–1905 he was a member of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research . On November 17, 1905 he was at the University of Vienna with the work of the shipping in the Danube region by the end of the 14th century Dr. phil. PhD . 1905–1906 he was a scholarship holder at the Austrian Historical Institute in Vienna, where he worked on editing the Nunciature reports on the Peace of Westphalia .
From 1906 he worked at the Münzkabinett of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna , the federal collection of medals, coins and money tokens , initially as a volunteer and from 1907 as an assistant. After Carl Domanig's death , he became curator in 1913 and finally director in 1926. He also studied law at the University of Vienna from 1907 to 1911 and graduated with a Dr. jur. from. In the Münzkabinett he was responsible for processing the newer coins and soon recognized the importance of coins in monetary and financial history, deviating from conventional numismatics. From 1929 he taught at the University of Vienna as an honorary professor for numismatics and monetary history of the Middle Ages and modern times . Since 1908 he was also a consultant for economic history and technical monuments as well as for museums in the Federal Monuments Office. In this function he was involved in the defense of the Austrian cultural collections against the successor states after the First World War . In 1938 he was forcibly retired from all of his positions.
In April 1945 he was reactivated, he took over the management of the coin cabinet again and became the first director of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. In this role he was responsible for rebuilding the museum after the war. He was appointed General Director of the Austrian Museums of Cultural History and founded the Museum of Austrian Culture as a department of the Museum of Art History. He retired on December 31, 1949. From 1945 to 1954 he taught again as an honorary professor for numismatics and monetary history at the university, and from 1946 also for museum studies.
In 1949 he initiated the establishment of the Association of Austrian History Societies. Since 1956 he was its honorary member and from 1961 honorary president. From 1950 he was President of the International Numismatic Commission.
August Loehr died in July 1965 at the age of 83. He was buried in the Matzleinsdorf (Vienna) cemetery.
His title of nobility was lost on April 10, 1919 due to the Nobility Repeal Act .
