The deletionpedia was deleted items from a project that has taken on the task English Wikipedia store.

The Wikipedia articles could be accessed there, together with information about the deletion (deletion date, name of the administrator who carried out the deletion, and a link to the deletion discussion), but without images and other multimedia files. It was also noted whether the article was deleted by a so-called quick deletion or a normal deletion discussion, as is usually carried out among the volunteer authors of Wikipedia.

The Deletionpedia archived over 60,000 articles deleted from the English language Wikipedia from February to September 2008. No further articles have been added since then. A German version was planned, but has not yet been implemented. For the German-speaking area there are similar projects such as Marjorie-Wiki and PlusPedia . Articles with reference to Austria and of sufficient relevance in the local context are also received and maintained by the RegiowikiAT project .

functionality

Like the Wikimedia projects, the site is operated with MediaWiki , but the pages cannot be edited. After an article was deleted from Wikipedia, a bot inserted it with the additional data about the deletion. According to Deletionpedia, articles depicting copyright infringement, articles posted to offend people, articles with severe grammatical errors, or articles whose full version history is still available in Wikipedia sister projects were not saved.

reception

In connection with the "culture clash" that arises within Wikipedia between proponents of "deleting" and "keeping" articles, the Wall Street Journal called the deletionpedia. Other media took up the topic and reported on the controversial deletion discussion on the English Wikipedia entry on Deletionpedia, which ended with the result that the article should be kept.
