Wolfgang Petrick (born January 12, 1939 in Berlin ) is a German painter , graphic artist and sculptor .

Life

From 1958 to 1965 Wolfgang Petrick completed a degree in biology at the Free University of Berlin and an art degree at the Berlin University of the Arts (HdK) as a master student with Werner Volkert . In 1964 he married Helma Hartmann . A year later, their daughter Nina emerged from the marriage. Wolfgang Petrick was a member of the German Association of Artists . From 1975 to 2007 he was a professor at the HdK and has been a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts since 1993 . He lives and works in Berlin and since 1994 also in New York.

Together with Karl Horst Hödicke , Bernd Koberling , Markus Lüpertz , Peter Sorge and others, Petrick founded the exhibition group “ Großgörschen 35 ” in Berlin in 1964 , the first self-help gallery (producer gallery in today's sense) in Germany. From 1972 he was part of the Aspect group as a “Critical Realist” . While his work initially focused primarily on painting, drawing, sculpture and graphic art, he has also been producing photographs since the beginning of the 21st century. Petrick has also been designing books since 2003 and has so far worked with the authors Hans Christoph Buch (Monrovia, Mon Amour) and Bora Ćosić (Alaska) - both of which are book editions in the Mariannenpresse edition .
