Derive (English for "derive") is a commercial mathematics software that was developed by Soft Warehouse ( Honolulu ) in the 1980s as the successor to muMATH and later distributed by Texas Instruments . Compared to other PC-based computer algebra systems , Derive's low hardware requirements (the MS-DOS versions could easily be stored on a floppy disk ) enable computer algebra systems to be used in environments with older or limited hardware equipment.

In the mid-1990s Derive served as the basis for some pocket calculator developments such as the TI-92 from Texas Instruments (with its successors and parallel versions TI-89 , TI-92 Plus and Voyage 200 ).

Austria was one of the first countries in which the use of Derive was tested in practice in various projects . For some years now, the program has been used in so-called “project-oriented mathematics lessons” in Germany . Derive is not being further developed by Texas Instruments in its existing form, but is to be merged into TI-Nspire CAS in the medium term . The last version is Derive 6.1.

Examples of the syntax

SOLVE ([2a ^ 2x + 3y = 7, x-5y = 0], [x, y])

leads to the solution:

[x = 35 / (10a ^ 2 + 3), y = 7 / 10a ^ 2 + 3]

DIF (SIN (ax ^ 2), x)

is differentiated or derived to:

2a x COS (ax ^ 2)

Further developments

The development and sale of Derive ceased on June 29, 2007.
