Erna Diez

Erna Diez (born April 8, 1913 in Kaschau , Austria-Hungary ; died December 1, 2001 in Graz ) was an Austrian classical archaeologist .

Life

Diez studied classical philology , archeology , art history and history at the University of Vienna and completed her studies at the University of Graz . In 1937 she received her doctorate. phil. She used a trip to Italy in 1939 to study ancient art. From 1943 she worked at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Graz and supervised the collection of Roman stone monuments in Styria . From 1945 she headed the Institute for Classical Archeology at the University of Graz and gave lectures at the University of Graz. In 1967 she became an associate professor of classical archeology, in 1970 she received a full professorship , and in 1983 she retired. In 1967 she became a member of the State Historical Commission for Styria .

Diez 'importance lies in her research on Provincial Roman art in Noricum . Your lecture at the 8th International Archaeological Congress in Paris in 1963 is considered to be groundbreaking.

In 2008 a street in Graz in the Straßgang district was named after Erna Diez.
