Peter Scherrer

Peter Gerhard Scherrer (born March 14, 1958 in Linz ) is an Austrian classical and Roman provincial archaeologist .

Life

Peter Scherrer studied Classical Archeology and Ancient History at the University of Vienna from 1977 to 1985 . He completed his studies in June 1985 with a doctorate on The Cult of Named Deities in the Roman Noricum in Vienna with Gerhard Dobesch . During his studies he took part in excavations by the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Carthage in 1980 and in excavations by the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI) in Erythrai and Ephesus from 1980 to 1982 . In 1984 he participated in the restoration project of the Ekklesiasterion in Metapont for the Rome department of the DAI . In 1985 he was entrusted with the excavations of the Vienna city walls and the Stubentor on Stubenring and the Gothic chapel on Minoritenplatz as part of the Vienna subway construction .

In 1986 Scherrer became an employee of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, for which he remained active until 2008. Here he participated, among other things, in the Austrian excavations in Ephesus - since 1987 as a member of the excavation staff in Ephesus, since 1993 as a member of the directorate of the Ephesus excavation - and in Austria since 1988 with the Roman remains in St. Pölten ( Aelium Cetium ) as well 1988 to 1991 as head of the excavations of a Roman villa in Deutschkreutz . In 2005 he completed his habilitation at the University of Salzburg . Since 1995 Scherrer has been lecturer for Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna, and since 2001 at the University of Salzburg. In 2002 Scherrer joined the international research project Fontes epigraphici religionis Celticae Anticae . From 2004 to 2007 he represented Austria in the research project Transformation , from 2005 to 2007 he headed the research project Economic Archeology in Northeast Noricum . In 2007/08 he was the head of Carnuntum research at the ÖAI.

In 2008 Scherrer was appointed professor for Classical and Roman Provincial Archeology at the University of Graz and was appointed chairman of the Institute for Archeology. After several years of vacancy, he filled the professorship last held by Thuri Lorenz . In 2006/2007 he was already visiting professor there. He became the founding director of the Center for Antiquity and director of the Graz University Museums . In 2011 he became Vice Rector for Research and Promotion of Young Talent at the university, making him the fourth deputy to the rector Christa Neuper in the university hierarchy .

Scherrer has been editor of the specialist journal Römisches Österreich since 2002 , co-editor of Pro Austria Romana since 1987 and co-editor of the specialist journal Keryx - Zeitschrift für Antike since 2011 . In addition, he has published the Austria Antiqua monograph series since 2008 . In 1992 he was awarded the Lower Austrian Prize for Culture and Science . The author has published more than 100 magazine articles and nearly 20 books as an author or editor. Since 2002 he has been chairman of the Austrian Society for Archeology . In 2004 he was elected a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute, two years later, for his services to archeology in Slovenia, he was appointed an external member of the Slovenian Archaeological Society . In 2004 he also received the advancement award for science and art of the state capital St. Pölten , in 2009 the honorary badge of St. Hippolytus in gold for special services to the diocese of St. Pölten .
