The Finnish Democratic Republic or Democratic Republic of Finland , Finnish : Suomen kansanvaltainen tasavalta , Swedish : Demokratiska republiken Finland was a satellite state of the Soviet Union that only existed from December 1, 1939 to March 12, 1940 . President of the puppet government was Otto Ville Kuusinen . The national territory consisted mainly of the areas of Karelia in eastern Finland captured by the Red Army in the winter war (not to be confused with the province of eastern Finland, which was repealed in 2010 ).

The official capital was Helsinki (in the unoccupied part of Finland ), the de facto capital was Terijoki , today Selenogorsk . On March 31, 1940, the area was annexed to the former Karelian Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic and, as the Karelo-Finnish Socialist Soviet Republic, formed an independent Union republic within the Soviet Union until 1956 .
