Dieter Knibbe

Dieter Knibbe (born July 22, 1934 in Siegen ; † June 27, 2015 in Vienna ) was an Austrian ancient historian and epigraphist .

Life

Dieter Knibbe grew up in Austria. He attended grammar school in Villach and from 1954 studied Classical Philology and Ancient History at the University of Vienna . In 1959, with a study of the embassies of the Roman Republic in the Hellenistic East, he became Dr. phil. PhD .

From 1960 he worked on behalf of the Austrian Archaeological Institute on the excavation in Ephesus , where he recorded the city's inscriptions and advised the excavation team on questions of ancient history. In 1978 the Turkish city of Selçuk made him an honorary citizen . From 1990 to 2000 he headed the research project of the processional street and the Damiansstoa in Ephesus. In 1994 he was acting head of the Austrian Archaeological Institute for a few months.

From 1979 on, Knibbe held lectures at the University of Vienna in addition to his excavation work. In 1982 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the inscriptions of the Prytaneion of Ephesus for Roman history, epigraphy and especially Greek epigraphy of the Roman Empire . In the same year he received the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art .

In 1988 he received the title of Associate University Professor. Knibbe was also a visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck .
