Hans Taeuber

Hans Taeuber (born November 15, 1954 in Vienna ) is an Austrian epigraphist and ancient historian .

Hans Taeuber studied Classical Archeology , Ancient Numismatics and Ancient History at the University of Vienna from 1974 and was employed as a researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and as a study assistant at the Institute for Ancient History, Classical Studies and Epigraphy at the University of Vienna. In 1985 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on "Arcadian inscriptions of legal content" and worked from then on as a university assistant at the same institute until he was appointed assistant professor in 1996. In 2006 he completed his habilitation with “Studies in Greek Epigraphy” for the subjects of ancient history, antiquity and epigraphy and was then appointed as an associate professor. Research stays abroad took him to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.

Hans Taeuber mainly devotes himself to the study of Greek inscriptions. He undertook several research trips to Turkey , especially to the plain (eastern) Cilicia , and has been taking part in the excavations of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Ephesus since 1992 , where he is responsible for the publication of the inscriptions and graffiti. Together with Peter Siewert , he also created a corpus of the inscriptions from Olympia .

Hans Taeuber is co-editor of the specialist magazine " Tyche ".
