The Ataturk Sea Villa Florya ( Turkish Florya Ataturk Deniz Köşkü ) is a historic presidential residence and official residence of the founder of Turkey , Mustafa Kemal Ataturk . It is located on the coast of the Marmara Sea in the Florya district of the Bakırköy district in Istanbul .

The building was built in 1935 by the Istanbul city administration for leisure and recreational use. Today it is a history museum.

architecture

Designed in the Bauhaus style by the architect Seyfi Arkan, who received an order from the Istanbul city council in 1935, the villa was completed on August 14th of the same year and handed over to the state founder Gâzi Mustafa Kemâl Ataturk.

The building is built on steel piles driven into the seabed and connected to the sandy beach by a 70 m long wooden walkway. The L-shaped, one-story villa consists of a lobby, reading room, bedrooms and bathroom. There are also staff rooms in the building complex. The total area of the villa including the pier is 602 m².

A grove was built as a garden on the site of the destroyed Agios Stefanos monastery. This grove is called "Ataturk Grove Florya" ( Turkish Florya Ataturk Korusu ) and is now a public park. The lake villa is seen as an example of the "early architecture of the Turkish Republic".

During the time that Ataturk was staying in the Dolmabahçe Palace , he came by boat to swim in the sea villa, in the company of numerous local personalities. He used the lake villa as a summer residence for the last three years of his life. In 1936 he stayed there from June 6th to July 28th. His last visit was on May 28, 1938, over six months before his death.

The lake villa was also used for receptions and scientific conferences. Among her visitors were Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor , and his wife Wallis Simpson .

After Ataturk's death, Turkish presidents such as İsmet İnönü , Celâl Bayar , Cemal Gürsel , Cevdet Sunay , Fahri Korutürk and Kenan Evren used the Florya sea villa as a summer residence.

museum

Due to the advancing urban development and the resulting pollution of the sea at the site, the mansion fell into oblivion. On September 6, 1988, the building was handed over to the National Palace Department of the Turkish Grand National Assembly . It was renovated and reopened to the public as a museum in 1993. A section of the sea villa is reserved as a social facility for members of parliament.

The museum exhibits furniture, tableware, personal belongings such as swimming suits, and a collection of Ataturk's photographs that were taken there.
