John of Trogir
John of Trogir (* 11th century ; † 1111 ) was Bishop of Trogir . He is considered the patron saint of the southern Croatian city of Trogir .
Life
There are numerous legends about John of Trogir, but not very reliable data. The Roman patrician name Orsini, which is often ascribed to him, is probably a misspelling of the indication of origin Osor . He was a monk in the Camaldolese monastery there , before he was appointed bishop of Trogir by Pope Alexander II in 1064 after the death of the Bishop of Trogir and an impending split over his successor .
In the four decades of his work he left deep marks in the religious and social life of the region, which are reflected in the legends. His greatest act is the defense of the city against the Hungarian King Koloman .
John was buried in Trogir Cathedral, where an elaborate tomb in the chapel named after him commemorates him.
