Kraśnik [ ˈkraɕɲik ] is a city in Poland in the Lublin Voivodeship .

history

The first settlement on the site of today's Kraśnik existed as early as the 13th century. In 1377 the place received city ​​rights according to Magdeburg law . In 1486 a church was built and at the same time the first school and library. During the war with the Swedes , the place was destroyed in 1657. During the Third Partition of Poland , the city became part of Austria . In 1809 he was accepted into the Grand Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 into the so-called Congress Poland . Kraśnik lost his town charter in 1878. The Battle of Kraśnik in 1914 was one of the first Austro-Hungarian successes of the First World War and was used extensively for propaganda purposes. Based on this, the Austrian commander, Viktor Dankl , was appointed Count Dankl von Krasnik by the Emperor in 1918 . After the World War, the place became part of Poland again, was given city rights again and became the seat of a powiat . During the Second World War, the Munich company Schmitt und Junk built a petrol depot for the Wehrmacht near Kraśnik. Up to 350 Jewish forced laborers from the Budzyn SS labor camp were called upon to build it . In 1948 the Kraśnik Fabryczny settlement was founded near Kraśnik, which received town charter in 1954 and was incorporated into Kraśnik in 1975. This also included the village of Budzyń.
