Ivan Katalinić

Ivan Katalinić (born May 17, 1957 in Trogir ) is a former Yugoslav football player and football coach. He belonged to the so-called golden generation (Croatian zlatna generacija ) of the 1970s of the Hajduk Split association. In his time as a goalkeeper he was compared to the English world-class player Gordon Banks and called Ivan the Terrible (Croatian Ivan Grozni ) in his coaching days because of his toughness towards his players and his attack-oriented tactics .

Career

Katalinić played in the Hajduk Split goal between 1970 and 1980, winning four Yugoslav championships and five Yugoslav Cups during that time. During this time he also played 13 games for the Yugoslav national football team . He then moved to Southampton FC , where he ended his playing career in 1983.

After returning to Hajduk in 1983, he was goalkeeping coach and in 1993 he was first head coach of Hajduk's first team. In the 1994/95 season he reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League with the club . Later he coached other Croatian clubs and was also employed abroad. He also took part in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups as assistant coach of the Croatian national team and won the bronze medal in 1998 .
