Football in Croatia 1994/95

The 1994/95 season in Croatian football was the fourth since the breakaway from the Yugoslav Football Association and the re-establishment of the Croatian Football Association .

For the first Croatian league (Croatian Prva Hrvatska Nogometna Liga , short 1. HNL ) 16 clubs were approved, the second league (Croatian Druga Hrvatska Nogometna Liga , short 2. HNL ) started in three seasons with 16, 17 and 19 teams .

Hajduk Split became champions and started in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League . For the UEFA Cup in 1995/96 no Croatian club was approved. The twelve best teams qualified for the 1st HNL "A", the last four started in the following season in the newly introduced 1st HNL "B". The top scorer was Robert Špehar with 23 goals.

Cup competition

32 teams were qualified for the cup competition. Hajduk Split won the cup in two finals against Croatia Zagreb. In the 1995-96 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Croatia Zagreb was not allowed to compete.

Supercup

Champion and cup winner Hajduk Split won the Super Cup without a fight.

European Cups

In the 1994/95 UEFA Champions League , Hajduk Split was eliminated in the quarter-finals against eventual winners Ajax Amsterdam . In the 1994/95 European Cup Winners' Cup , Croatia Zagreb failed in the first round at AJ Auxerre . No Croatian teams were eligible for the 1994/95 UEFA Cup .

National team

For the first time since breaking away from Yugoslavia, the Croatian national team was allowed to qualify for a European Championship. A 4-0 win in the friendly match in Israel was followed by seven qualifying games for the 1996 European Football Championship , of which Croatia won the first five games, drew once and only lost in Ukraine. The 2-1 win in Italy in particular caused a stir. Before that, Šuker was the most successful goalscorer with seven goals in seven qualifying games.
