Football in Croatia 1993/94

The 1993/94 season in Croatian football was the third since the breakup from the Yugoslav Football Association and the re-establishment of the Croatian Football Association .

For the first Croatian league (Croatian. Prva Hrvatska Nogometna Liga , short 1. HNL ) 18 clubs were approved, the second league (Croatian Druga Hrvatska Nogometna Liga , short 2. HNL ) started in two seasons with 16 teams each.

First League

Since the last-placed teams of the 1992/93 season were spared relegation due to the Croatian War, all 16 first division teams from the previous season were allowed to compete again. In addition, the respective champions of the two second division seasons 1992/93 came .

Hajduk Split became champions and started in the 1994/95 UEFA Champions League . For the UEFA Cup in 1994/95 no Croatian club was approved. The first relegated teams since the introduction of the 1st HNL were Pazinka Pazin, Dubrovnik, Dubrava Zagreb and Radnik Velika Gorica, the league played with 16 clubs in the following season. Scorer was Goran Vlaović with 29 goals.

Marsonia Slavonski Brod and Neretva Metković were promoted to the first division.

Cup competition

32 teams were qualified for the cup competition. Croatia Zagreb won the cup in two finals against NK Rijeka and qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1994/95 .

Supercup

Master Hajduk Split won the Super Cup in 1994 on penalties against cup winners Croatia Zagreb. Both finals ended 1-0 for the home team (on July 24th in Split and on July 31st in Zagreb ).

European Cups

For the first time since the Croatian Football Association was founded, its representatives were admitted to the European Cup.

In the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League , Croatia Zagreb failed in the first round to Steaua Bucharest , and in the 1993/94 European Cup Winners' Cup Hajduk Split also lost to Ajax Amsterdam in the first round .

National team

Because the Croatian national team was not allowed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup , they only played four friendly matches . The win in Valencia against Spain was offset by a defeat in Bratislava against Slovakia and two draws (in Hungary and Argentina ).
